I used a little digital zoom to compose the image. Bad I know, that's where the softness came from. Thanks for your honest opinion.

I think you must have been on general focus here, Daniel, where the lens focuses on the thing closest -- like the hair on the left. This gives the face a softer look, which works well in this case.
But if you shift to center focus and choose one of the eyes or the mouth by depressing the shutter button while you focus, the face will be sharper like in your "Experiment" and the hair -- which comes forward -- will be softer.
Just a thought, my friend, maybe over-analytical, but it works well for beauty shots.
