Your portraits have an unusual style. It's as if you're trying to convey a feeling of disturbance through pics.

Sandy-you have a very nice portfolio but I would not expect anything less from an artist. I like the effect used here to focus on the subjects eyes and facial features-nice job and keep em coming from Motown!

You have some very strong and very strange images here. Can't help wondering what you do with them - they seem more fine art than journalism. As for this one, I wonder if you used Lighting Effects filter, or is it natural lighting?

Perfect frame, perfect detail for portrait. Regards.

I am in the camp which says the lighting is OK here. It is an intense image and the intensity of the light gives it a shock factor. The vignette really works and concentrates attention right where it's needed. Only nit is I find it slightly orangey but it's powerful portait work.

You pretty much nailed the essence here! I also like the vignetting to black around the frame.

Very expressive portrait with warm colors. I like the cropping too and the "darkning - effect".
The lighting and the focus on the original maybe could have been better, but the way you "after worked" it... it works for me :-)... I really like it as it is.
Congrats, Alex

I really like this portrait. I like the fact he seems like a determined man and with the glasses he seems intelligent too. The eyes denote a very serious guy. Good job Oh by the way i scrolled down and looked at the original. I like this one better. WHile the lighting might could be improved upon but i really can not offer much tech help, the lighting you chose brings out the qualities you envisoned to me much better than the original

Sandy, now I see the original image I think you did a very good job with the post-processing (cropping, and adding the vignetting).
It really increased the impact of the image!
I keep to my opinion about the lighting...
I think you agree with me that the original image was too light, becasue you darkened it in the post-processing yourself.
So with a little bit underexposure you would have kept more detail in the eyes, and there would have been no need to darken the image afterwards.
I know lighting is very difficult, especially when shooting portraits...
Often you can not take much time for the technical things because otherwise you would loose the spontaneity of the moment.
It might be a good idea to bracket (take the same shot with different exposures) and pick out the best one afterwards.
Keep up the good work :)

What a great lighting support! Surely a different way to present a portrait Sanddy!

evocative interpretation in the title, the light is very fine for that purpose, the cropping and expression of the man too

Cool concept. The direction of light added to the intensity of the moment; however, it also produced some issues with hot spots.

thanks everyone for your time in commenting and words of encouragement..
:)
i just printed a copy of this for the model and it came out better than it looks here...i was suprised..and thrilled !! ya see here it is kinda bright but on paper it darkened a bit...kinda muted things a little.whew..
tis strange the emotion you can capture in a photo..
a milli second really, of a facial expression, can be caught and show a mood that was not even felt at the time..kinda strange really...how one expression leads to another..and right in the center of that change i snap.
neat things people are.

thanks again ..
:))

Certainly a lot of emotion in this look, and here I was thinking all men lost their willpower when they married! Love your light Sandy its very vivid, vignette works fairly well but I'd try not to let it in the eyes if you can, just remove that area and feather around it a bit.

Great Photo Sandy!
Yes, the light you used is what gives it dimension. Also you used just the right focal length. The bit of distortion on the right side of his glasses makes them appear to come off the screen.
First Class!

The title and the photograph brings to mind a saying: "Sometimes the only joy there is in the face of adversity is in the possession of one's own identity."

Powerful shot, Sandy.
I like the crop and the model's
expression is very beautiful and it make up for the somewhat harsh lighting
Good work!

Very intense Sandy... Although some people might not agree with the lighting, I think IT makes it.

You captured a great expression... It makes you wonder if he is actually smiling or he is unhappy.

hmmmm...i see what you mean ...i have had no school in photography whatsoever so i go mainly shoot by feel...
the original i will post...

there was a concentrated mass of light in his right eye..
upon fiddling with level..just a hair..the spot seemed to get hotter...
any suggestions??
any if all would be greatly appreciated..
thank you for your kind words..
:)

You found a very good model, the comment you added is very applicable here!
From a technical point of view, I believe you could improve on the lighting ( the right
eye is a bit bleached out) and the depth of focus (I suspect focussing more on the eyes could make the image more powerful). Still an image with great expression!
