About This staircase is in a museum in Va. Beach. I saw this amazing lighting when we entered the museum wondering why no one else saw what I saw. Influenced by the lack of interest of the others, I continued thru the museum. It took about an hour or so. When we were leaving I noticed that the light was still there so I took a picture.

Julie,Do you mean don't include the doorway? Never really thought about it. It's a good idea but I kind of like the arch doorway. Thanks though.

Have you thought of cropping it so it is just the stairs on the left hand side. go from the window to the floor so you end up with a V on it's side.

Reminds me of trimming my beard. Sometimes it gets a little out of hand. First I cut a bit too much off the one side. Then, I have to cut more from the other to balance it out. Pretty soon... oh well, it always grows back.

John, Thank you for taking the time to comment on this. I think the only thing that would still bother me is those flowers on the right in the foreground. I think that's probably why I did so much cropping. Once I cropped them out I had to crop more on the other side to make it a standard size,(for framing and matting).

Hi Karen. Thanks for posting the original. Now I can really see what you were excited about. I find the uncropped colour version much more appealing.

The complementary colours and subtle tones of the original are amazing, but as I'm sure you noticed in hindsight, the composition is a bit busy. That's probably why you cropped it so hevyhandidly. I feel however, you threw the baby out with the bath water.

To improve this image I would suggest you crop or clone out the flag (or whatever that is hanging down on the upper left) and maybe also the four lights inside the three window frames.

The shadows on the wall, the patterns on the floor, the staircase, the frames within frames, the colours, tones and textures all add up to a delightful visual symphony. The items I have mentioned are (in my opinion) discordent notes within that symphony.

John, Here is the uncropped image in it's original form.

The light here is lovely but your comment about cropping out much of the horizontal has teased my apetitie to see what you got rid of. Could you post the full version of this image as an attachment to this page?

basically, wider angle, couple steps to the left to eliminate what u notice thru the door, and hopefully in the process snag the intersection of the railings where it meets

Terrence, Thank you for the comment. I can always increase the contrast of this since it is a color neg converted to B&W in photoshop. It also was a horizontal shot so I cropped it a lot to the way I thought looked the best. What would you do different in a reshoot?

given that this image is 13yrs old i wont make any comments at a reshoot of it, however punching up the contrast would certainly make for a more eye catching experience, great light, well seen~
