You lost a lot of detail with either the lighting or conversion. Try this in elements for conversion to B&W. Make a hue/saturation layer and just click ok. We'll come back to it. Now make a second hue/sat layer and desaturate to B&W. Now back to the first hue/sat layer. Double click on it to bring the sliders back. Now you can use the lightness slider in all the colors or master channel to bring up details. Watch the photo as you play with the sliders. When you like what you see then stop.
