What I find hard about PS is avoiding its signature 'look' and feel. While I like your composition, I have a hard time not thinking about PS in this picture.

Have not a clue how to tell you to get a 3D effect...this is very pretty though. Could be a lovely silk scarf design.

A lovely colourful image Elizabeth, you are doing well with layers, maybe experiment with the blending modes, try overlay or maybe softlight, just for starters, regards - Richard.

Ah layers! I have to get around to that myself someday. I don't understand what layers did here. A good choice of pebbles here and arrangement. On my monitor it looks like the canvas is over the pebbles not the pebbles on the canvas. this is hard to explain. The texture of the canvas is very pronounced and takes away from the texture of the pebbles. Also it makes the pebbles look flat. They lost there 3D. You can sculpt them as if you were painting them to give them some roundness if thats important. Keep working on this good idea. Regards gil

Well, I took a photo of pebbles & spent a lot of time creating this with different filters & effects until I was happy with it. I think I should write down each step, but I get carried away & lost in the creation.
