Hard to say for sure without seeing it in person, but the common tern has a bright orange beak with a black tip during breeding season and a rounded head like this one. On the other hand, Forster's tern, according to Sibley, tends to have a longer tail like this one as well as this beak coloration, but a somewhat less rounded head. The common tern is more common.

David's right. It's not a Kingfisher. All my life, I've called these black-headed birds Kingfishers, and it really is a Tern, I looked it up in Roger Tory Peterson. My Tern to eat Crow? I haven't decided if it's really a "Common Tern" or some other variety; anyone know for certain?

John - nice shot of a nicely colored bird. Regarding the catchlight, another trick is to use just a touch of fill flash, backing off on the power (or however your flash might work). The eye picks up the highlight.
Regarding my egret and tripod. I've gotten in the habit of shooting almost everything with a tripod, especially as I like to shoot at sunrise and sunset when the light is "pretty" but the intensity might be lower. I have a tripod with a ballhead mount. For the egret, I loosened the tension on the ballhead, using the tripod as a platform. I hold the camera, and swivel it around, letting the tripod support the weight of the camera and the lens. Generally, it works pretty well.

Not a bad photo, but it looks like a common tern, not a kingfisher. If you're looking for a guidebook, I like _The Sibley Guide to Birds_, though it's a bit bulky to carry in the field.
To get a little more depth in the eye, which can get lost in the surrounding black feathers, watch the eye closely as you are photographing and wait for a good catchlight.

Very clear and vivid. There is such a feeling of depth to this image. The colors are so inviting they draw you into the image. The composition is well-planned and pleasing to the eye. Excellent use of lighting. Wish we could see his eye better :)
