Good conbtrast between the main subject and its background here, Dave, and this both in light as also in hie. I completely agree with Andre here when he says how hard it is to keep the subtle differences of "blackness" and allow the textures and the own look of each part to shiw so well. I will also say that your DoF was exactly right here as it kept the whole bird in focus and separated it from the softened out background. Add such a good timing and here we are another good image of wild life.
