Wow, I love the sense of movement here! And the conflicting emotions of calm sunrise and storm.

Thanks Eb..yes..it's a very popular spot and Mel mostly shoots AV whereas I change according to the conditions..I think it an accumulation of a lot of failures that helps get the knowledge......You're right...shooting where surf is can give you a huge variety of images ...simply because it changes by the hour
Things I look for in a sunrise (sunset) is cloud formation to give mood and diffusion of light and color.......the state of the tide so you know how much beach will be exposed...and the size of the tide which will give you an idea of the speed of the water...and of course the time of the sunset....I could go on but I would bore you to tears.....if you're ever in Australia come and do a co shoot Eb......Nick

Nick, thanks for your detailed response. This is not a shooting condition which I have encountered so excuse my ignorance about what that surf might look like in a timed exposure. (Mind you surf characteristics vary considerably.) You have got it down to perfection here! I did look up Mels' images, as you suggested, and surmise that this may be a popular spot and certainly should be! All are different and yours I like the best!

Well...Eb you get that effect in this type of shooting...I often shoot with shutter priority (in burst mode) to try and catch that swirling effect....with HDR you lose "time"..and the critical period can be a manner of seconds...I was with a photographer Mel Brackstone who's published a lot of pics from this shoot (look her up..same type of shot)... We were there that morning the conditions leaned to a good shoot... with Shutter speed my default is .8 of a second for a strong incoming tide..if it becomes fast I can go down to .3 of a second... at a high or full tide it's usually 1-2 seconds....

As to the PS work...you don't have to be that good when you get mornings like that..

Single exposure - very interesting! The foreground surf does show a repeating pattern. Shutter speed? Amazing post processing work!

Thanks very much Eb....was a single exposure and treated in PS...

Very impressive perspective and dramatic rendition! Looks to me like an HDR with the individual exposures contributing to a multiple exposure effect! Nice!

And the interest always rises too when looking at such tremendous photography, Nick! The sense for depth and perspective in such a dramatic composition under such a string palette of hues! The surface of the sea and the surface of the clouds seem to squeeze my view toward the depth - very forcefully but also not at all "artificially"! I am so glad to see thw wide angle being used for such a carefully done job, especially since about 90% of the wannabes woulkd take a tele and depict a small small part of that majestic view, making it thus impossible to the spectator to follow their imrpession! A great choise and a great image here!

The combination of good focus with the softening due to water movement is fantastic here!

Extremely well done!

Nick

I guess what everyone is not realising is how difficult is to get the perfect exposure on the sun AND the reflection of the sun, whilst using long enough shutter speed to create the water sheet.

Bravo, Nick !
