Thanks a lot Andre, for the info!
Sometimes my mind seems to be blocked, really! I do have two such filters and still I didn't think of putting vaseline on the filter rather than on the lens... Which also shows what kind of guy I can be. The easy solution is in front of his eyes and still the guy looks for complications! ;-)
That's why it's so good to give him a good kick from time to time, I guess! ;-)
Thanks once more!
Nick

Hi Nick, I would put something like vaseline on a filter rather than directly on the lens. I use eyeglass lens cleaner for my lenses and filters. That seems to work fine. I have also used translucent candy wrappers held over the lens hood with elastic bands. That is alway good for some fun distortions. Andre

What a great idea! And then I am completely independend of the cleaning schedules of the swiss railway, too! Who needs them, anyway? ;-)
BTW, I used thing transparent foils for that since I am a bit afraid to apply any substance directly in the lens, but it didn't really work. How could vaseline be cleaned up without any remainders in the lens but also without using to strong solvents? The latter might attack the coating of the lens, I think.
Cheers!
Nick

Hi Nick, If they clean those train windows, you might have to start putting vaseline on your lens for effects instead. :) Andre

Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Andre! I like it exactly for the same reason.
I do think that the window made much of the work for that. Which means that except expensive objects we also need dirty window glass (for free! ;-)). Well, sometimes it seems that a good old fuzz-box in the chain of high quality gear can be exactly the right thing. Thanks heavens they don't clean the windows as often as we clean our cameras and lenses, that is! ;-)
Cheers!

Hi Nick, I like the nice muted colour you are using lately on some of your still life images. It looks soft and natural. I'm wondering if the fact that you took this through a window had any diffusing effect to soften it further. It seems to work pretty well in any case. Funny isn't it, we buy expensive optics and then take images through dirty windows. :) Andre

Great photo .. perfect in the exhibition...nice object and DOF!! I think that the glass did a special texture here and color with blue reflections...
