About Julius is the eldest son of the head of the Masaai village that we visited. He invited us into his modest hut, where we sat facing each other as he talked. The hut is built of mud, supported by bamboo and other sticks, with a thatched roof. It is very low in height, and has a makeshift window in the form of an opening in the roof. In days of bad weather, the opening is simply sealed. Julius spoke of their lifestyle, work and food habits. He related how in old days a Masaai man would kill a lion and present it to his would be wife in the form of a marriage proposal. Killing a lion is illegal now, so the Masaai have to do with a cow now.

He talked fluently, in broken but surprisingly good English.

Masaai village, Ngorongoro conservation area, Tanzania.

ohhh, my mistake, I forgot to mention that I wasn't the only one with Julius in the hut. My friend Brian was also with me, and Julius was mostly speaking with Brian.. I actually spoke very little with him.. taking pictures more, and listening to all that he was saying.

I just asked him (couple of times) what they ate... he said cow's milk, meat and blood (!) .. yes, and he repeated it two times !! :):)

cheers !

good picture Avi; not many technical issues here, very good for the light conditions I can imagine; love the POV and great distorsions of the hands, light is terific
the main problem, however, is no eye-contact and although I'm not a fanatic about it think it could be great if he had looked at the camera
peace....txules

Wow Avi. This is damn near perfect and doesn't need any changes at all in my opinion. The colour is not only important, it is vital. I think B&W may be good, but would lack context of the Masaai. I love the textures of the inside of the hut hiding in the shadows. Low POV is inspired choice. Be happy; very happy with this.

As you have probably guessed by now, the temptation to convert it to b/w was HUGE :):):)
.. but, I resisted it, because, just as Dave pointed out, I wanted this to be an *environmental portrait, and the color is very important in that respect. The bamboo sticks, the greased yellow can, that streak of bluish light, and above all, the red drapes of the Masaai man's clothes, everything together tells a story.

The color, I felt, is a *character* in this shot. :)

As regards the sharpness, sigh... my struggle with post-work is a never ending battle which i know I'm gonna lose..

cheers !
Avi

Yes, this I like. It has the characteristics of jd's b/w work but now this is is in color. I am in a dark period and I notice I need colors.
I love this a lot, the rays with dust but also his face.
A tremendous dynamic contrast in this image.

7/7
