let's say a shot like this one.. if the diff in f stops between the foreground and the back was 3 stops (which it usually is during sunrise/set), can I use a 4-stop AS a 3-stop, by keping the topmost part outside the lens periphery ? (I am considering a rectangular one)

You might want to start with a 3 stop. I have found it easier to use the hard edge, but it would depend on the subject of course.

Dave, I am thinking of buying a gnd, 4 stop soft edge. Do you think that's a good decision, and that I can use also as a 3 stop if I want to ?
