About A bull elk on the Hoodoo Trail near Banff, Alberta,in the bush with his harem and several immature males.
With the Oly 1.7 converter this was equivalent to 630mm, handheld. The light was fairly low on an overcast day under the trees, thus the low shutter speed of only about 120 sec and the lens was wide open at 3.2.

What a great shot. And from that far off with all the worst conditions truly amazing. most people I think would have just given up and said it was a photo for the mind. You did an amazing job capturing this.

Excellent capture. Real sense of action in this wooded setting.

The light is rather 'reflective' (there's probably a technical term that I don't know) and that spoils the shot a little, at least for me. That aside, though, this is a great shot.

Execellent shot in low light. Sometimes you almost forget they are not tame. Good to keep your distance. Del.

Hi Dave,
I think you did quite well under the circumstances and light conditions. As you say, with the Fuji S5000, you really don't want to get into using the 800iso setting because it only shoots a 1mp image. Most of the time the 400iso setting works quite well. I always found I was better off to stay away from the digital area of the zoom for a little better quality image. Do you find the same thing with the multiplier on the camera too?
Andre

Who is watching who. Looks like a candid for you and a big question mark for him. Well done in the heat of battle. Hard light in the trees. Glad you got this one. They are bugling out my bed rooom window as they are in the rut big time here in SW Montana. I have not gootten close enough to pull of a good picture. This makes up for it. Looks like a healthy male here. Thanks for sharing, Stan

A good one of wild life, Dave, and your timing was just about right! There is only some little overexposure on its back and some kind of contrast lowering that ate up some details of its fur. (Or could that be due to motion blur because of the low speed?) Still the face and the front part of the elk are burned very well!

Perhaps a less centered composition would be better here, namely to include the whole tree at the left and omit the one at the right, which is disturbing for my eyes as it stands very out of focus.

Cheers!

Nick

Great shot Dave considering the low light, what a rack he has. I might clone out that tall grass stalk near his neck.
Well done.

Hi Riny, thanks for the comment! I would have dearly loved to have a smaller aperture, and a faster shutter speed, but the conditions just didn't allow it, and asa 400 is really the highest practical for my camera.
Dave.

A well taken and captured wildlife study under difficult circumstances my friend. My days of handheld tele shots are very limited and when I fail to use a tripod it can be noticed Loads of great detail, excellent eye contact and lovely natural tones. A study with a hint of danger and menace Dave. Good work my friend. All the very best to you.......Ray

Hi Jen, thanks for the comment, and for adding me as a friend! As you've seen I've returned the compliment! The elks can be dangerous in the rutting season, which is now, and I was very careful at keeping some trees between us, and not appearing aggressive at all, as I edged past the herd on this trail.
Dave.
