About
While trekking through the desert in Gansu I had to pass through this graveyard. The graveyard is immense, my guess is that it's at least 10-12 square kilometres in size (lots of room for expansion as well).
This was taken near the outer edge of the graveyard as I entered the vastness of the desert. As far as I could tell, I was the only one around... the place is very quiet (as you might expect).
I have uploaded another image from this same area that I took three years ago, for comparison.
Alison, some of the grave markers closer to the dunes are partially covered over by sand. I have a few images of those, will try to show you later on how they appeared.
The distances here are deceiving, the graves in the foreground here are quite a distance from the dunes themselves. You need to be there to fully appreciate the size of them (the dunes).
What a fascinating place and you have photographed it very well. I would think these structures would be covered by blowing sand after awhile. The structures add wonderful and interesting gesture to the vastness, shapes and lines of the sand dunes. Both photos are great but in the recent one you were luckily to have some wispy clouds in the sky. Alison
