Usually I ask and at the end show them the results, with digital that is. Asking can be verbal but also non verbal makinh friendly and polite gestures with hands and camera. In difficult cases take a polaroid cam with you and give him or her a copy.

The idea of a cloudy day comes into my mind exactly because of the shadows that do not show as a high contrast to highlights as they do under strong sunlight. And this also contributes very much to the general look and feel of "everyday" - which includes also days with low light conditions. I think it was good to try this hot, Harry.
About the distance to the people, well... at (hypothetical) 70mm you are not really away from them, but still you can get a step backwards. This is exactly why I ask. I find it still too difficult to stand so close to working people and try some shots. I wish I could do that like you in some similar case. I think I must start asking people, ey? BTW, did you asked them? How did they reacted?
Cheers!
Nick

Cloudy day ? Yes, just look at the shadows. I used a 35-70 mm zoom zo I was pretty close, just on the dry part of the beach estimate tip of the boat ( die Spitze )

Nice action shot in my beloved Malaysia. Nice colors and composition. The man in the middle is also observing the photographer, but he has no time, maybe no money for taking a picture of you. cheers, Paul

Great one for its vivid displying of the fishermen on their daily work, and also for the nice details of their cloths. I only miss a bit contrast, and btw. do you perhaps remember of it was a clouded day? It looks like that to me because I often get such "moody" colors when I try shots under clouds.
Still the image is good both as a snap and as a documentary. It carries all that struggle to push the boat- the tension is very well visible. Oh, and another question, if I may, how far away from the people were you, Harry?
Cheers!
Nick
