Roger, I'd be surprised if the D70s's noise levels are lower than those of the D200 as it costs a good deal less! I think this was shot in RAW (.NEF) format and processed in a photo-processing software that shall remain nameless. I'll look up SilkyPix; thanks for the tip.

The D70 must have less noise than the D200, Amitava. I have never been able to use higher than ISO 800, and even then the shadows look terrible. I have found that shooting raw and developing in SilkyPix using a noise-reduction setting gives me better results, but it's a lot of extra fuss and bother. Maybe more than it's worth...

Thanks, Luca. I like your suggested cropping.

Actually the other one was in color too. It's just that the backlighting virtually desaturated the image.
You're right, there is some cropping involved here. However, a large part of the noise comes from the ISO1600 setting, I think, and also suboptimal settings on the D70s. I'm still searching for the best setting for high ISO values.

Aha! This one in colour... I think B&W was the right choice for the successive planes veiled by mist but this colour view is fine, too. Is this an enlargement from a small part of the original image? There is rather more noise than usual.
