Another thing to consider, that is WAY more portable, is using several camera flashes. Go to www.strobist.com to see how they do it- using numerous flashes on their own tripods and they're all triggered via infrared signal from your camera's flash, acting as Master to all the slaves.

Thanks Paul, appreciate that info. Am looking for something that I can take along with me when out and about. Wasn't sure what would be the best thing, but given that you have "tried and tested" and always get good results, then it is worth a go.

Yes, Liz. They sell a battery/inverter that lets you plug into A/C power anywhere you go. It's called the Vagabond II and I really enjoy it. At 20 pounds, it also straps to my strobe's tripod to act as a weight to keep the wind from knocking it over when I'm doing location shoots.

I was going to add that Alien Bees stand behind their product, so not only is it affordable, but any problems have been promptly and happily dealt with.
Oh, yeah, I also have a wireless transmitter and some receivers, because I got tired of tripping over/stepping on the PC cord going to the strobe from my camera.

Hey, Pam. I'm completely satisfied with my Alien Bees. I now have 3 Bee 400's, along with a couple umbrellas (that came with the 2-light kit) and I added on to that with a Brolly box and most recently a giant 5x3-foot soft box, which I LOVE.
If you have carpeting, you'll do better with canvas backgrounds, because high heels will punch through paper seamless on carpet, unless you first put down some plywood or temporary flooring.
This setup used a 9-foot roll of black paper and three lights (and a fan, natch).

Hi Paul. Beautiful girl and fantastic work here. I'm looking at some backgrounds and studio lighting for my guest room! What set up do you have?
