*****

Mariachis originated in the Mexican state of Jalisco, in the town of Cocula, in the19th century when many Mariachi were roaming laborers moving from one hacienda to another. With the revolution these diminished from haciendas wandering from town to town singing “corridos” of revolutionary heroes and enemies, often carrying news from one place to another. The Mariachi then took to playing in public venues for tips. Earlier these dressed in calzones de manta, and huaraches, homespun white cotton pants and shirts and leather sandals, the clothes worn by most peasants in Jalisco but later they took to wearing the “traje de charro” consisting of a waist-length jacket and tightly fitted wool pants usually ornamented & embroidery.

This music became the symbol of the Mexican Revolution because it represented the Mexican’s national spirit or the Spanish-indigenous blood of Mexican ethnicity and is so anchored in Mexico’s history that it is found in all types of celebrations. Originally consisting of three violins, two trumpets, one Mexican guitar, one vihuela and a guitarrón - over time it has divided music into two types: the authentic folk consisting of only string instruments and the commercial urban which has changed the original music the mariachis played.

I fond the strong, hyper-saturated colors to be ideal for that contrast between the Mariachis and the background wall, Noemi. The coloring itself suggests "Mexico" to me - perhaps I saw too many western movies too.

The extremely hard contours/contrasts of the shadows and the details of the statuettes themselves add a bit of surreal look of what has happened as a schematic remembrance of the past.

The rather strict color palette makes it also to a good candidate for a different postcard.

Cheers!

Nick

P.S.: Any Mariachi orchestra needing a metal guitarist?? ;-)
