About Dressage (pronounced dress-ahhzh /ˈdrɛsɑʒ/) (a French term, most commonly translated to mean "training") is a path and destination of competitive horse training, with competitions held at all levels from amateur to the Olympics. Its fundamental purpose is to develop, through standardized progressive training methods, a horse's natural athletic ability and willingness to perform, thereby maximizing its potential as a riding horse. At the peak of a dressage horse's gymnastic development, it can smoothly respond to a skilled rider's minimal aids by performing the requested movement while remaining relaxed and appearing effortless. Dressage is occasionally referred to as "Horse Ballet" (cf. nl:Dressuur). Although the discipline has ancient roots, dressage was first recognized as an important equestrian pursuit in the West during the Renaissance. The great European riding masters of that period developed a sequential training system that has changed little since then and classical dressage is still considered the basis of trained modern dressage.

Early European aristocrats displayed their horses' training in equestrian pageants, but in modern dressage competition, successful training at the various levels is demonstrated through the performance of "tests," or prescribed series of movements within a standard arena. Judges evaluate each movement on the basis of an objective standard appropriate to the level of the test and assign each movement a score from zero to ten - zero being "not executed" and 10 being "excellent." A score of 9 (or "very good") is considered a particularly high mark, while a competitor achieving all 6s (or 60% overall) should be considering moving on to the next level.
At the start of the test, the horse enters at A. There is always a judge sitting at C, although for upper-level competition, there are up to five judges at different places around the arena—at C, E, B, M, and H—which allows the horse to be seen in each movement from all angles. This helps prevent certain faults from going unnoticed, which may be difficult for a judge to see from only one area of the arena. For example, the horse's straightness going across the diagonal may be assessed by judges at E and H.

The dressage arena also has a centerline (from A to C, going through X in the middle), as well as two quarter-lines (halfway between the centerline and long sides of each arena).

My daughter in fully concentration in a dressage competition,
which I think is a wonderful co-operation between horse and rider.
As she prefers jumping, this is easier for me to watch, being scared of
horses and the hights they jump;)) xxJen

Dont feel jealous my sweet friend, just be careful and dont fall off like I did on her age;))
I am sure you will do well my sweet Rif and dont compare with my daughter as she started when she was 5...;)))
10 years of practise is quite some time, you have to tell me all about your experiences riding, maybe you are a natural talent, otherwise my daughter can always teach you...lolll
Enjoy your weekend, big warm hugs and kisses,
xjenx

Nooooooooo...my little girl doesnt really look like me my sweety, she is so very different, will send you a shot next time, she is much more fragile and prettier, believe me!!;)))
I am sure she would love to go for jumping on a higher level, but it costs a fortune! And she needs a bigger horse anyway as she grew taller then I am even now...
Be well my dear will talk later, something sad happened yesterday, I knew I had this feeling...remember? Big hugs my dear, xxJen

She is always so excited and happy when having these competitions, although it gives me a nervous breakdown as well, all this hasting and the horse all curled up and washed and with braids:)) I can hold the horse because she is gentle, but really scared of most ot them, its a former trauma from falling off etc..lolll Did try it again, but after 5 minutes I jelled that they please should let me off...you should have seen me, quite funny:))
What is a canter gait my dear? She prefers the jumping competitions, will have one on Tuesday and next Sunday, so my heart is knocking already:)
Wishing you a great and relaxing weekend, waiting for your fush to come:) Hugs Jenxx
