Again the "awards". Congratulations for them, and go further. Any, any hints about the "awards" - place, time, competition?
I don't care about your "doing OK", Shirley. You are always welcome to disrespect any single image of mine, and I'll take that as an additional input. But definitely not as an offence to "my awarde skills". In other wrods, if you expect the usual diplomatic respect from me, you're completelay at the wrong adress!
This one is a simple cheat, and if you like we could also open a new discussion, not in UF but in some more weighting places like for example National Geographic. Go for that, you "arwarded photographer"???
Cheers!
Nick

You know, my dear Nick...for someone whose photos, at least here on UF, are not particularly above the ordinary, you sure are free with your criticism. Having won two gold medals in Austria and too many awards other places around the world to count, I think I'm doing okay.:)

Oh yes, clearly night photography can be exciting, Shirley! And if one has the good luck of some good light source, like a street light or similar, then even more. From what I still can recognize on the image it must have been an irresistible scene for trying some shots, even without the tripod, or anything else to at least fix the camera somehow. Such a pity that I will never be able to directly see that light which I mean to "think of" when I see the windows - it must have been a great scene indeed! Any chances to get some more of that with tripod, or is not so easy to get there again?
As about PS "afterburning", well, the altering aspect is not as "creative" as it is believed to be so naively in general. That's for the kids. It is the possibility to create something very different - to really *syhthesize* something like for example this one from Jeff Lieberman:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4889651
That's another liga, or isn't it? And *this* is what the filters and effects are extremely good for, as elementary operations which all together generate "reality that doesn't exist". Your image is good and nice but what impression does it cause? Everybody will see that it is only a very real and indeed very photogenic scene simply with some distorted-shifted colors and contours. You don't "create" by that, you simply alter. Not to speak about the always present by-taste of such alterations. They smell like simply caching the fact that it was no good image. That's a bit like flooding the bad meal with a colorful, strong sauce. Much like somebody in a fastfood trying to tell me he's a great cook.
Cheers!
Nick

Hi Nick. I always like the original night shot, but I admit this was taken long ago when I was just learning photography and did not have a tripod with me. Now, of course, I almost always use a tripod...especially at night. Anyway, I like the look of it, but the foreground was blurry, so I did the kind of selective layering with this filter than I knew would create a firmer outline on the foreground objects and still keep some of the magic of the light that attracted me.:)

The neon glow effect and the selectively done "cheat" did work very well for delivering that look of some picture books that develop a story as a combination of a bit of writing along with some images that ignite fascination/imagination. Inasmuch it works.
Nonetheless this kind of "cheat" is not the "cheat" of an expert - anybody can do that nowadays. Nor I see the original as some kind of reference to the paths that the "artist" took in demand of his/her vision. And so, what should I say? That it looks good? Well, any other applied filtering could look as well. or better, or worse.
Such images live of course only in connection to the vision of the maker, but this is exactly what I can't find out. Any hint, Shirley?
Cheers!
Nick
