About
I never knew this man. I have only family tales about him. He was in WWII. I remember back, way back, holding a ragged and jagged bit of metal in my hand and people (large, adult type people) looking down at me and with very serious tones wound about their voices saying, "That is a piece of shrapnel they took out of Uncle Martin." (Shrapnel was often said, shapnell, scrapnell, scrapmetal) Now, at the age of 49, I realize that hunk of metal was never taken from the body of Martin... it was too large to be a souvenir... it was at least large enough to finalize his time on Earth. So it was a bit of WW II... and I do not know where it is this day. Still, in a room of my house I have this tin of coins that family legend says Martin gathered up on his travels... war related and otherwise. I do not know if they are valuable... I just know I have them in a tin, sitting on a shelf.
Oh! OH!!!! Manchester??? I have some very dear friends from Staleybridge!!!! And MM (my wife) and I will be going to Birmingham/Manchester in the spring of 2008. Crazy how stuff happens and connections are made.
The side of the tin assures me it is a cold cream that removes make-up and contains no animal fats. OH!!! And it is for "professional AND home use." The 1940's... gotta love 'em!
Intriguing story and nicely photographed. I'm fascinated as to what I should "ask any girl on the lot", as instructed by the message on the lid of the tin!
