Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Edlira!
I am afraid that it suggested much more than I thought that it would. ;-) It was only a photo of complete emptyness and disconnection from anything. But I am really glad to see how much different interpretations it caused. I have to think a long time about that, but I already enjoy really taking part to the many different ways to see it.
Cheers,
Nick

Hi Andre!
And thanks a lot for the nice detailed comment. Hey, I am the only one around that won a BIP for a future project! UF has to acknowledge that and add the appropriate project in which this image is the winner! ;-)
I am very pleased to see that the image caused quite the opposite impression and interpretation to you and to several other people. For me it was the complete detachment from anything - even time! Rather the hypnotized look with an empty mind, just holding the cup and not even recognizing that there is coffe for the "fix" ;-)
But your interpretation adds another new aspect for which I am very grateful It is a rather "living" aspect in the sense of a small delight, a small joy of the everyday.
Such an interesting thing again to see how many different (and thus enriching for me) impressions a single image can cause.
Ciao and thanks again,
Nick

Hi Nick, what a photo with a meaning. really... I think you have done a great job capturing something so routine & usual as you said & turn it into a story telling, suggestive photography. well done my friend E

Thanks a lot for the detailed comments and the interpretation which puts my mind into a new direction about the image. I would like the same amount of details on the wrist as on the hand though, for having a horizontal transition of sharp focus in the foreground to soft focus at the background.
Now on to your interesting interpretation, I was more on the side of really forgetting about anything and just looking like hypnotized - deleting the things that one has to do from mind for just being able to survive until they a re over. Some kind of letting time pass and being unaware of that until the things to do have changed and one is more eager to do the new things that have to be done.
So your interpretation, which resembles Dave's one, reveals me a new facette of the image. A rather conscious facette even in desperation. The amazing thing to me is that though the interpretations are different, one thing remains the same and that is desperation. So perhaps it was that what I was capturing? A very surprising thought but also intriguing since it lets me perhaps understand some more hidden parts of my own intention here.
Thanks a lot again!
Nick

Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Dave!
Very very interesting to read your interpretation, as my intention did have to do with time, but in the sense of forgetting about it and everything else - a rather empty state of mind while travelling. Or if you wish, spending time completely unconsciously just like trying to put a bridge from the now to some time later on, when the unwished conditions of the now are no more valid. Deleting the now, perhaps.
So your interpretation takes the opposite point of view which is very interesting, as it shows how many completely differnt views can co-exist on the same image!
Best wishes,
Nick

Hi Nick, The little morning or evening caffeine "kick" that most of us rely on to get us through our busy days. Well done here Nick. It might be only a coincidence that the top half of the cup is bright and sunny now, while you get your little coffee "fix" Alas, it is only temporary:) This one reminds me of an old project that I had to do in one of my first classes, many years ago. "Hands" See, there should be a project for it :) I nominate this one for BIB in the future "Hands" project! Andre

Thank you very much for the detailed comment, Olga Melissa, and especially for your interpretation that amazes me really.
Considering the image form the technical point of view, well, I'd be more happy if the wrist would be as good in focus and with such details as the back of the hand. But I'm also happy the way it is now.
I guess too that several people would tend to identify with the depicted things since they are not really anything special. Just something of every day life with nothing spectacular. This matches your "less is more" view of the image.
But I rather tried to somehow visually reach that completely emotionless state that comes to somebody when there is not really much to be lost anymore. Loneliness of that kind when one doesn't wish anything else than to be left alone. Something like the ultimate "I don't care" but not a trace of any wish to escape alienation. There is a strange point of no return, and from that point on nothing makes sense. So you really look without seeing anything.
And so your interpretation has to surprise me a lot and in a very interesting way, since you seem to perceive it much more the emotional way than I thought that it would convey. It was more neorealism than anything else to me. I have to rethink about that, which is always reason to be glad, since this put another source of seeing into my own perception.
Thanks a lot for the very interesting comment, and all the best!
Nick

As everyone else says, excellent composition and amazing clarity in this shot. The details of the hand are, to me, more interesting than the cup, which seems to be the 'main' subject of the shot (if there is such a thing here, I think the hand and the cup are one, but I feel like separating their importance so that I can focus more on the hand). What I also like about this shot is the stark contrast, the hand is *almost* overexposed on the top, and the shadows have no detail at the bottom. It suggests the absolute and the desperation of "staying alive", there is no middle ground. We must do what we need to, to stay alive, to keep going no matter what, or we will fail.
I especially like the lines in this image, you have captured the rigid, straight lines of the table and the window frame, and they perfectly frame the hand, with the squiggly lines of veins, holding the cup with its circularity, both if the cup and the shadow, and the short vertical lines around the sides, finally leading to the straight shadow off the lower right. Makes for a very interesting image in many respects.

An evocative shot, Nick, with the label just visible enough to show us the contents, implying a common "addiction" for passing time and staying alert. Dave.

This will be a favorite of mine, sometimes I feel the same way, especially when I feel tired, lonely , surrounded by people who go to work. The detail is absolutely amazing, it is a very good quality image, detailed, moody , telling a story about human feelings and the neo-romanticism that drives so many people to loneliness.Of course, you know the rate I have put, I mean, this is an image many will long to see as they recognize themselves in this situation.Minimal lines...less...is more.:)
