What a toning and what a lighting on this B&W, Dave! You gave importance to a subject that many would simply overlook. An unimaginable sharpness throughout the whole depth and the stump stands out not because of the usual selective focus but rather because of the selective lighting, while still you managed to preserve a nice balance of the lighting! I don't think at all that the highlights of the left side are overblown!
Excellent!
Nick

Brilliant Black and white choice and great perspective I like how you have managed the corp leaving more of the roots in the foreground. Cheers Dave. 7/7

Hi Dave, It didn't come out too bad though. It can be a problem sometimes. You can try underexposing in the bright areas, but then you run the risk of loosing detail to darkness in some other areas of the image. That could be the lesser of the two evils when manipulating the image in the software program. Andre

Excellent image Dave! The textures work well in black and white...really pop out at you. Almost looks like a creature is coming out of the stump (lower right side)...got my attention! Good one--Bill V.

Lovely study of form and texture Dave. The blown highlights do disturb slightly but as a whole the image is very striking due to the bold lines and form of the stump against the texture and pattern of the grass. Great B&W! Joggie

Contrasting textures for an excellent black and white! It is impossible to avoid blown highlights given the limitations of the media - unless you use HDR (or buy a Fuji S5 for extra dynamic range.) Eb

Nice work Dave, looks good in B&W, I often am tempted to also take photos of these stumps, but when I get home, more often than not, I discard them, don't know why I do that. Hope you had a nice visit to Ottawa, you'll have to get down to Mud Lake one of these days just to see the place. Best regards.

haha, the title made me laugh.
You were in Ottawa? I'm back here now too. It's getting colder though. :(
Anyway, I should be commenting on your picture. ;) Nice composition and I like that you used black and white instead of colour.
