About	Ralph. What can I say about him? I am not man enough to stand up and do what he did… I am not talented enough to pay him back for the time he spent with me. While in college (Illinois State University) I spent some time in the Honors program. For one of my Honors projects I interviewed WWII veterans from Spring Valley. I have known Ralph for 20… hmm… no… close to 30 years. We talked about WWII and his role. He was a tail-gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. “Dream Baby” was his ship. He flew 35 missions. Several years ago he went to a reunion of the 533rd Squadron. He was given a silk scarf with a few B-17’s in flying formation imprinted on it. He called me to his house and gave it to me. I refused to accept it until he scribbled his name/rank/serial number on it. I have not been in contact with Ralph for 2 years. The last time I heard from him was after my mother died in 2005. He read about her passing in the local paper and sent me a condolence card. In a very shaky, jerky hand he had written: “Jim, your mother died. I am sorry.” I am such a cad for not keeping up with him. I am off tomorrow. Maybe I will try and spend a few minutes with him.
