About	Took this photo today at Mud Lake. Very hard to get a shot of this bird. It would take off quickly if you got close to it. It had a very interesting call and I haven't seen one of these before.

Dave is correct. It is a Yellow-shafted Flicker. Out west, they have the Red-shafted Flicker. Both are commonly refered to as Northern Flickers, a member of the woodpecker family.
