Hi John, I shot this with my 20D and my Sigma 170-500mm EX DG 5.6 without a flash. I was about 20 feet away from the feeder and shot bursts of about 20 frames. Out of 200 or so shots I only got 20 or 30 good ones. Thank you very much for the compliment. I really appreciate it very much.
Best Regards
Sam III

Sam this is really a superb shot. Beautiful detail, vivid coloring and spot on timing. Is this an electronic flash assisted shot? I've been hooked on shooting ruby-throats for years. Tons of film later, I've found freezing the wing action can be accomplished best by flashing (sometimes multiples). This is a wonderful piece, great perspective, great light, great job. -john

Great colors! The sharp focus on the bird and the slight blur of the wings really gives a sense of how fast their wings move. I always love watching hummingbird birds - they are so quick.
Great shot - different point of view!
I'm surprised it took you so long to post this one.

Beautiful Sam . . . And . . . uhhhhh . . . well, isn't that different? Good wingfreeze at the 1/1000sec . . . and caught at JUST the right moment . . . either you had numerous shots you tossed . . . OR you had INCREDIBLE luck . . . OR you are a cyborg of some sort and timed this with infinite skill. No need to say which . . . always leave 'em wondering! LoL!
I checked this thouroughly for something to nitpick . . . I mean . . . critically anaylize. Initially I thought an ever so slight tilt down on the left (measuring wingtip to wingtip) but then realized the feeder was likely hanging so the red line would be brilliantly balanced horizontally by Ma Nature. Naturally - the photo IS balanced horizontally Perfectly and exactly how I would have done it too.
BUT . . . Uh Oh! LOOK at this!! The distance between the right side wingtip and the edge of the photo is less than the same distance on the left side of the shot!!! For this type of shot I'd consider centering the subject. A strip cropped off the left side will center it perfectly . . . though usually centered is bad. In this case . . . it would (IMO) be ideal. Sam . . . Your vault has some good stuff . . . more to come??

Super details, focus, colors. What a great capture. Really like this one - very different from the usual hummingbird shots. Don't recall ever seeing their wingspan quite so clearly - and those little tiny feet are tucked up under the tail area are so cute. WTG - glad you are going through some of your bazillion photos and sharing some with us. More would be great!
