"what is this idea and what is skype?"
Well, it occurred to me while looking at this image that it would be better if we could have a live discussion about it with a couple of other people. That way, I could express my lack of understanding and everyone else could put me right! It's the same in my work - while the internet has facilitated all sorts of fantastic long distance interaction, at the end of the day you can't beat face-to-face contact or some other sort of closer interaction.
Skype is a VOIP (voice over internet protocol) system that many of us use in Europe. I don't know how widely it is used in the US, but basically anyone with a decent internet connection can download the software and make phonecalls to other users for free. Calls can also be made to landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world at very low rates.
My spark of an idea was that every once in a while, a group of, say, 4 UFers might hold a Skype conference call (or maybe just a Skype chat conference - just thought of that option) to critique one photo each. As I said, it was an idea in the back of my mind - I haven't fully thought through the logistics. But if it sounds like something that might be of interest I could look into it a bit more...
In the meantime, you could Google Skype for more info.

Uhhhhh . . . wow. Thanks Robin. Somehow I expected you to mention that I "look dashing today . . . but . . ." - LoL! You're right about the new twist . . . and it's hard to get a new twist on Sunsets . . . Often we see something being done time and again . . . the ubiquitous bee / butterfly macro for example . . . sunsets too . . . but they're done often because they ARE beautiful and well-loved. Still . . . sometimes a unique twist on a shot . . . (inspired by a genius) . . . can be quite refreshing! LoL!

Doyle -- thanks for your response; it is amusing how many discussions go on from time to time about the decision over B&W versus color. One of the things I have learned from you and others is to consider the color/B&W decision path in every case. Often of late I produce and play with images in both and try to make a best-case decision. I think that is one of the primary reasons why I enjoy USEFILM so much. Although I do almost all pictures "just for fun" I have the satisfaction of learning new things as I go along.

Ok . . . now John . . . you know . . . uhhhh . . . Yeah (shakes head) I guess I did think I got away with that one! LoL! Oh well, culture's over rated anyway . . . even yogurt has culture! Besides . . . I was ill when that was written . . . (ahem, *cough* *cough*) and only just find myself on the mend! :)
The sky - believe it or not - has a very high cloud cover and I accented it (actually pulled it out) by adding a slight orange filter to the image in PS. I see I failed to add shutterspeed and ISO to this . . . but it was a low ISO and clearly not too dark so noise would be unlikely there . . . depending, I suppose, on shutter speed. It should be clear at any rate that it's not noise since . . . well . . . it's seemingly clear to me that noise would not allow itself to come in the pattern you see . . . striations fom a central point with illumination uniformly coming from the (fairly obvious) light source.

You're absolutely right that sunsets in general . . . and this one in particular . . . would be enhanced by including the color! But my thought here was to show the power of the Pacific Ocean and not the sunset itself . . . (I have several sunset shots already and it occured to me that the ocean is a peripheral element in them . . . not the star! The reason it isn't in color is to allow the patterns to emerge and to get the eye OFF the beautifully colored sunset. That light layer of high cloud cover you see, for example, is virtually invisible with the color turned on . . . a slight orange filter was the only way to make them visible even in B&W. I assume most people will think - initially - exactly like you about the waste of beauty by eliminating all the wonderful color . . . largely because beautiful sunsets are almost universally loved photos. But thanks for the comment, honesty - and strength to keep looking at all my work!! :) It's always appreciated!

I believe you've achieved your goal Doyle. There is definately power here...is it the lost color? Or is it the composition and movement of the water, combined with the fisheye that's dragging us out to sea? Dunno...but I like it!

I guess I'm not quite sure what to make of this. But that probably shows my lack of CULTURE! (Ho ho, and you thought you'd got away with THAT one unnoticed!)
OK, let me try and be a little more constructive. I think this works fine for the surf itself (a little soft - intentionally or unavoidably?)
It's the sky the worries me more, especially on the left where it looks like spray (but obviously isn't) - high cloud or noise?
No, I need some help with this one. I think it's one that would benefit from a concept developing in the back of my mind - a sort of on-line live critique session or UF with a Skype conference call.

Doyle - excellent and pleasing to view but now you have piqued my curiosity about a color version. I would have thought that the sunset would have been enhanced by color. I do see your point about where to put the emphasis (surf) but color might be warranted here.
