Lynn.. you can do better shooting this.. by making use of tripod. i have done this type of shots and have posted one, which is again light trails.. "Christmas lights" in San Jose, where i did a timed exposure of christmas lights in San jose, and zoomed in I think. Don't know if zoomed out. Anyway send me an e-mail, i will tell you more about gels. Color gels are nothing more than a collection of colored plastic sheets (samples) which are provided for free for those who are involved in theatrical production.. it is similar to pantone color process where you get all the colors.. i got free samples and just waved them in front of the lens..

alternatively you can look at Cokin Filters..
