Thanks for all your feedback Mark. Using my Sekonic, I adjusted my strobe output for f5.6 principally because this was some FAST moving stuff, and I didn't want to go any shallower and risk missing focus on the whole shot.
further, the audience behind their mark was about 20 feet back, thus no risk of them being in focus.

I tell ya, the Minx looks better with less make-up, she's a "Natural Woman" but that's alright. We are Stardust, we are Golden, we are caught up in the Devil's bargain/ but we have to get ourselves back to the Garden.... (I can roll that way if need be - she has beautiful feminine wrists and arms - pants are a bad choice though, whoever was in charge over there) This one REALLY needed to be f/2.8 FOR SURE....

Hi, Kelly. The photo that won grand prize is not one that I would have picked from my portfolio: http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=284230
But, it certainly helped me accelerate my abilities, so no complaints here.

Thank you for your kind comment on my bird photo.
You have a neat portfolio with all the fashion portraits. If I may ask, which photos did you win the contest with? I certianly will be back to see more of your work. So sassy and full of life!!!

Thanks, Gerhard! I had not planned the amount of spill illumination on the audience, but I AM rather pleased with the overall balance. One thing I really dislike is how on camera flashes tend to make your subject swim in a sea of darkness, with a rather strong fall-off of light in the image.
This strobe had a shoot-thru umbrella, and that large a source provided a very pleasing secondary illumination.
Your insights are always appreciated my friend.

My first reaction was "a bit busy in the background", but after looking a little longer i think that that's what makes this photo. A feeling of estrangement, that she's not part of the group or that she turned her back at the group.. Either way.. strong shot!
