Easter 2006 - after a lovely day on the Canals of Venice we had to rush to try and catch the last bus to our campground. When I crossed the Grand Canal and saw this light - I risked missing the bus - but didnt. I think from a photographic point of view if your going to visit Venice it may be worth paying extra to stay in a Hotel on Venice itself so that you can catch teh sunrise and sunset periods - we found that from our camp out near Marco Polo Airport we just could get into Venice before 8am and had to leave by 8.30pm
Joggie, your right about the high contrast. You can see the sky has blown to the left where the Sun would be - the natural blue of the sky fades quickly. I did play around in Photoshop to see what I could come up with in curves but was not happy. When I got more details into the shadows the overall effect was to draw the viewer away from the light on the buildings, It changed the viewers focus onto the two Gondola's - still I would be happier if the sky was not blown. I know I could use layers and completely replace the sky. In fact Kevin Temple ( another Usefilmer) would probably drop a bunch of dramatic clouds into this for me if I asked nice - LOL - Thanks for your comments
This is a loely composition with nice details in the foreground and on the buildings. Very difficult to balance the light in such high contrast situations David but I think you did very well. I think this will make a very nice B&W. Regards. Joggie
