Dear Amar!
Thank you for your interest and your most observant comments. One can make out that this is a fretless bass, if they look, but the lighting and expression of the performer were more the reason I shot so tightly.

Aniko my friend, I really like the lighting on this one. Unfortunately we can't see much of the fretless bass. But again, the image highlights really are about the lighting and his expression.

I am pretty fortunate as far as having steady hands... however, although I do play piano/keyboards and guitars, I cannot play a fretless bass! LOL! I believe my "best" instrument (musically) is my singing voice :)

I have tried to do this type of shot and my hands are not steady enough! I want to try a VR, but I bet I will still have a very hard time hand held. I play fretless bass also (among other instruments) and really like this shot as a musician and as a photographer.

I thank you for your wonderful comments and appreciation of the "challenges" involved. I love this type of challenge :) You are right about the blinking lights. But being a musician myself, I kind of know when lights will blink...it's all in the rhythm of the music.
I have literally hundreds of band and solo performer photos. I am attaching another here for you where the light was even more challenging. I had to catch the image on a strobe light flash! :) Am very pleased with it and it is here in my portfolio, however it didn't seem to get as good a response as this less difficult image. That's the way it goes... lol...

Hello Aniko,
As a music-lover I like this kind of shots. A very nice composition, not much noise (handheld). So a good image with nice expression and lightfall.
I see big contrasts or blinking lights, so this must have been a difficult situation to operate in. Nevertheless your result is excellent ! Compliments, my friend !
I like all styles of music and did this kind of photography sometimes in my analogue period.
using a pilar or chair as tripod and so on.
Quite challenging this theme. Your view brings back the "longing for this" again...
And you know that puts a :) on my face. If you can achieve that with one image, you've done a great job. I added a pic of my "African -highlife - period. The musician is nowadays quite famous, Habib Koite.

Yes he does look like he is glowing! It is the stage lighting and the smoke machine partly diffusing the light a little that causes this nice effect I think.
