Well, this is difficult to achieve - backlit and black cat! Clever idea, the pillow - your portfolio is very interesting and entertaining, Jan.

Thanks!!! Roland is a shelter cat and we have no idea what parts of anything he is. He is handsome and kind of a character but that is all I can tell you about him. He favored me with the tongue for this pose but I figure it was just his way of showing how he felt at the time.

Looking at the picture, Doyle said "wow, look at those eyes" then I showed the tongue. He had to laugh. What a great shot. The eyes are great, but the tongue is priceless. Part Siamese? Looks like my Cheyenne.

Hanna- I always thought Roland was sticking his tongue out to express his opinion about me. If he was just smelling the air then maybe I won't take it so personally. :)
Thanks for taking a look at Roland.

Jon-- thanks for your comments. The white pillowcase was handy and I needed reflected light. Good investment because you can prop the pillow up into weird positions. Roland waited patiently while I adjusted the pillow and then stuck his tongue out as I was taking the last shot.

Bwaahahah... lovely shot. I have found it very difficult to get good lighting on either of our black cats. Obviously I need to invest in some white pillowcases.

Wonderful colours and light is good too.

Arthur-- thanks so much for your wonderful comments. The 50 mm lens is truly a best-buy and I would not have known it otherwise but Paul Lara, a usefilm contributor, told me about it when I saw some top-notch work of his with that lens. Based on his recommendation I purchased it and am getting excellent results.
Thanks for the "hats off"; in the 60's my friends in college were figuring out ways to beat the draft and I enlisted after graduation to their shock and dismay. Although I did not come back exactly in one piece I will never regret doing it. However, there are better ways "to spend your summer vacation".:)
Thanks again for commenting on Roland.

Nice shot Jan, it works really well with the backlighting and yet the eyes seem almost frontlit. Hard to beat the 50 1.8 for the cost of it, one of the best lenses out there for the money. Hats off to a two tour vet too, you guys are the greatest. Nice portfolio, best regards, Art.

Sally-- thanks for your kind words. I did need a fill so I used a white pillow case to refelect some of the backlight onto his face. Didn't want to use a flash but just a wee bit of reflected light.

Black cats are so hard to take good pictures of - especially in strong light - you've done a super job, I really like the way the sunshine highlights his head - did you have to use fill-flash?

Jim-- Roland poses at the drop of a hat. In fact he poses even when no camera is around. Go figure. On the other hand, my old Bassett, Zoe, leaves the room if she sees a camera coming her way. Do you use a flash around the cats? Many pets hate strobe and become "trained" to avoid the light.
--best to you, Jan

Yup; a pillow case. Only thing at hand short of popping the flash. Roland has been "missing" the litter box lately and the temptation to use the pillowcase for other applications did cross my mind. :) Thanks for your kind comment.
