Joggie this has to be the most outstanding photograph you have in your portfolio. And that is saying a lot considering everythin you do is a piece of art. But the method of getting this photo makes this one stand out. Wow. Great job and even greater that you take the time to explain your work.
Best wishes, Dave

Thanks Eb - I have taken hundreds of these. A racing pigeon fancier will do anything to get a picture like this of his top breeding pairs because the eye is used as one of the main guidelines for pairing up birds (thats a long and interesting story). I kind of perfected the technique and subsequently photographed many champion birds and top breeders. The lighting - well, the strongest source you can think of: the midday sun to ensure a small pupil and well displayed iris. A flash dont work that well except when you have the bird under a strong light source (very hot) or the sun in order to close down the pupil before taking the shot - then it doesnt make sense to use the flash. If you look closely at the photo you will actually see the shadows cast by the thin veins of the iris (another interesting story) just above the pupil. Regards. Joggie

Nice shot. It muast have been hard to get this. Even holding the pigeon it must have been a challenge. Well worth the effort. In thumbnail it doesn't even look organic (I was thinking perhaps a rusty hole in a piece of metal). Well done.

This is an amazing view of the bird's eye and yet is almosy as much an abstract as it is a super realistic representaiton of the eye. The color, detail and depth are wonderful. So well done. --Jan
