Justin: Bemused? Perhaps you should have read my critique before stating "it is based upon a completely rule bound idea". You seem to have fixated on ONE opinion which I still believe and you disagree with. " . . . this has beautiful color and tone and a wonderful minimalist composition - very sleek! Your range of lighting from the left to the right side of the composition looks to be problematic but you seem to have handled it well as far as exposure . . . " Hmmmmmmm . . . doesn't sound too rulebound to me! Beatiful color IS a critique . . . just not a negative one. The rest too. I mentioned "One thing, in my opinion, that would help this shot along . . ." and you apparently disregard the rest and then decide that a critique shouldn't be featured . . . even one well thought out . . . unless (I guess) YOU agree with it. The faint scent of sour grapes seems to be wafting up! I have no problem with a person disagreeing with any critique of mine . . . but to question whether it was well thought out or deserved to be featured, in my opinion, is just not cool. To condense it to a rehash of a rule is outright misleading. I know there are exceptions to that rule. I don't think now nor did I then that this is one. We disagree. I don't attack your thoughts or opinions . . . I closed with "Just some thoughts of mine for your consideration . . . " I am trying to offer opinions and help for people's consideration. What suprised me most I guess . . . Is that there have been more than a few FCs that were, in MY opinion, MUCH worse. I'll not mention them . . . but look through the list and I imagine you'll find what I mean . . . and even so . . . You decided THIS was the one to question. My advice to you would be to critique the images . . . not to critique the critiques!
Regards, Doyle I <~~~~~

Your pictures are perfection! I love each one in your portfolio. The cliché, “a picture can capture a thousand words” is incorrect because when I look at yours I am speechless. Simply amazing. Erin

I don't think you could have improved this image any better! It is so fantastic. First of all, the blue tone emphasizes the cold isolation of the tree which gives the image an unmistakeable mood. Your composition is fantastic: the tree and its reflection, the horizon line cutting mid-way across the image, gives it perfect symmetry. The bright light coming in from the left looks like a flashlight shedding light upon the otherwise dark tree, exposing its certain beauty, releasing part of its shackled existence from its cold blue surroundings, which ultimately results in a sense of peace and tranquilty. That you have the tree also off to the left makes it appear as though the tree is gravitating toward the light. It also acts to point to the thought: "Here is a peaceful place to be." All this is why this composition is perfect. Bravo, Brenda . . . and encore please!

exquisite.
i really like how the blue tones insist upon the solitude of the cypress, which, of course, adds strongly to the expressiveness of the image.
i am somewhat bemused as to why the above critique was chosen "critique of the day". for one thing, it is based upon a completely rule bound idea, and not the image itself; and i think that rule, the rule of thirds, would destroy this image altogether. the horizon fixed in the center is essential to maintaining focus on the cypress: central dispositions like this stabilize the eye and direct it to the visually most prominent element. one could say, with horizontal placement, the object defines the space. the all too familiar rule of thirds would sublimate the impact of the cypress, allowing the space to define its object--i think, the only addition more "space" would add to the image is to underscore the isolation of the object--but there is no need to emphasize that texture, since it is effected, as said before, by the blue tones, as well as by the placement of the light source. additionally, composing this image with any other horizon, would seriously affect resolution, reflections and color rendition in the cypress, part of the control that collects the eye. i believe it was ansel adams who said, "the rules of composition are nonsense." while i certainly do not have to sense of an ansel adams, it seems to me his is a caveat that certainly applies to this image.
well done, really well done. j.

Thank you for your kind critique. I have hundreds of images from Blue Cypress, this is just one of my favorites, I will be showing a few more here, depending on how tolerant everyone is. This series has to be one of the most difficult that I have done, it isn't easy shooting from a moving boat! I will take all critiques under advisement for the next upcoming shoot ;)

Brenda this has beautiful color and tone and a wonderful minimalist composition - very sleek! Your range of lighting from the left to the right side of the composition looks to be problematic but you seem to have handled it well as far as exposure . . . One thing, in my opinion, that would help this shot along would be if the horizon line wasn't a centerline through the composition. Since the sky seems relatively free of drama . . . I would consider dropping the lower crop which comes very near to that wondrous tree reflection. If not possible due to outside influences . . . then I expand the sky upward. Just some thoughts of mine for your consideration . . .
This is a wonderful shot . . . I very much like it!
