As the oldest continuously developed area of Vietnam, Hanoi 36’s streets and guilds have a history that spans nearly 1,000 years and represents the eternal soul of the city. In the 11th century, when King Ly Thai To chose Hanoi as the country’s capital, skilled craftsmen migrated to what is now known as the Old Quarter. Those who originated from the same village and performed a similar craft then formed guilds. The guild streets were named after their product and the development of these guilds played a significant role in the development of Thang Long – Hanoi.
