A great combination of creative decisions, Hugo! An admirable result! Strong saturation is great as it adds to the "roar" of the image impact. Composition is also dynamic and supportive of the movement. Eb

groet, Lex.

Hey Tom!
What a very pleasant surprise, it's great to hear from you - been quite some time. Hope all is good. Don't be a stranger, and please stay in touch...:) Please send me an email - there are still a few things to straighten, and I really would love to see your DV pictures....:)
Lot's of things have changed - I'm now a full time "pro", I've quit my job, and as of October 1st, I'm fully self employed.
As to this photo - Yes, I did use a fill flash - rear curtain. That's what froze the "2" and lit up the sign. It was a great night, and I'm really into photography, but you've already guessed that...:)
Hope to hear from you soon!
Cheers,
hugo

ok, it's been so long since i did this that i've lost any critiquing ability i may have had and all i can say is: awesome. like you i was inspired by the very same shot when i first join uf and have been trying to find the right location to get it ever since but to no avail.
the question: did you flash the signs? or is it just headlights? natural light from some other source?
the apology: sorry to have lost contact with you (and with photography) but very happy to see you are still going strong :) although my music habit has taken most of my spare time, i think i hear the camera calling me again. perhaps i'll cook something up for you (and uf, of course)...
take care my friend, tom

Love the Dooby Brothers, especially that song, and definatelly love this shot.
Looks like everything was in your favour here, lovely blue sky, great colour train, nice red lights and flourescent paint.
I like the composition and how everything else is so sharp, whilst the train is blurred with movement.
Really cool Hugo.

Awesome Hugo and congrats on the BIP!!! Hey, it seems we've been up to the same thing (well, obvious we usually are with the cameras and all), as I've been shooting trains for a series that isn't ready to put up yet. Mine aren't speeding by, but this gives me an idea -- maybe it won't take two years to fruition as did your inspiration -- but then again, maybe it will!!!! Hugs and I miss you all (especially you) at UF. Will be back when time permits. Antonia

Hi Hugo, don’t you start a new series? ;) I’m always attracted by this kind of images, I have to try it in the future. Excellent, Hugo! This is similar to my first upload to UF a couple years ago but I must say, yours makes mine look like child's play. And actually, my entry was one of the first couple of photographs I shot with my new Canon 300D when I returned to SLR (albeit digital). The photo is still in my portfolio: http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=238936
Since at the time, I really had no clue how to accomplish this, I fired the flash at the onset of the photo, allowing the engine of the train to be frozen as opposed to you firing it in mid exposure.
While some found your streaming lights to be distracting, I knew from experience that it was the lights from the engine and hence, knew the direction the train was moving.
When I took this shot, this track running through a town near where I live carried maybe 5 trains all day long. I had one shot at this unless I intended to camp out. Now I live near the busiest track in the States, carrying trains about every 5 minutes. I hope you won't mind that you've inspired me to go try again.
Congratulations on the BIP, a well-deserved award.
Best wishes, happy shooting and all that jazz, Dave

Thanks for that great explanation Hugo :) When I first started in photography just a bit over a year ago, I got a book and I might as well have been reading a foreign language, because most of it went right over my head. This is embarrassing to admit, but true, I didn't even know what an aperture was. I had no clue which lens to use for anything, it was all new and all very strange. I had no problem with what I wanted to take or composition, just had to figure out all of the technical stuff. I eventually got annoyed with not understanding anything I was reading and decided to forget the book, and just get out there and take pictures. I read the manuals, played with the settings, and experimented. That's how I learned. Reading your explanation brought back those memories and I'm thankful because I think I'm ready to read that information now and hopefully understand it...thanks for taking the time to explain that to me :).

Hi Linda,
Thanks for you extensive feeback, very much appreciated!
A fill flash on the rear curtain means the flash burst takes place just before the exposure stops (with film, the curtain closes again, preventing the film from being exposed) Likewise, a fill flash on the first curtain is one burst immediately after the exposure begins. Oviously, the duration of the exposure is longer than that of the flash burst, so there's no sync taking place at 1/60 or 1/125th, like when using a normal flash. Hope this makes sense,
Cheers,
hugo

Yeah, a sturdy tripod is essential for these kinds of shots. I was even a bit affraid that the tremour resulting from the passing train would already cause enough camera shake to end up in a rather fuzzy photo.

Hey John,
Thanks for the feedback. Nether wobble nor grafitti could've been influenced by me..:)
The Rear Curtain, heh? Nope, this isn't near my place...
With a first curtain fill flash, the burst goes off as the exposure starts (the curtain opens, exposing the ccd or film) Thus, with the Rear curtain, the bursts goes off just before the exposure ends and the shutter closes again, ending the exposure. This is a flash - camera setting...
Cheers,
Hugo

This is a superb example of a night capture of movement. Personally, I think I would prefer it without the "wobble" in the lights of the loco and without the grafitti, because I think the emphasis of the image is the strong colours and simple shapes that are predominantly rectangular.
John
PS. Where's the "rear curtain"? This isn't shot from your front room is it?!

Hi Hugo, Congratulations on the excellent shot and the well deserved BIP. This is definitely an image with the WOW factor. All of the diagonal lines really add a great sense of motion. I love it when night photography includes these kinds of rich colors, the complementary blues and golds make those lines stand out even more, and really add to the dynamics. Wonderful saturation and clarity as well. I confess I haven't done any real photography using flash so when you say "on rear curtain" I'm at a loss. I spend most of my time trying to understand light and exposure, in all the many facets, and haven't really worked with studio or flash shots yet, but definitely have it on my agenda....:)) Anyway this is an awesome train shot with a great title too...well done!! :)

Exceptional shot, even from your normal high level of output. Has a great feel, intense colors, and the half freeze with motion due to a fill flash is a great method to ghost out yet still retain some detail.
I can only assume this is a continuation of the cows, as the cow was on the track and is now somewhere down the line...

Hi Pankaj, I noticed it too. I think it has to do with the colour space you postprocess your photos in. By default, Photoshop uses Adobe RGB 1998. If you set the colour space to sRGB manually, you won't have that problem, as that's the commonly used colour space on the internet. See also: http://www.gballard.net/psd/srgbforwww.html for more information.

Hi Jeanette, I always enjoy a lengthy exposure. This time of dusk is also great as there's just enough light left to catch the colours, too. I've been using interval shots, and other means of capturing these effects in my Mothion Picture project for quite some time now. An ongoing theme I came up with to combine with my triptyches.
I'd love to see what you come up with, though. Just checked your portfolio, but can't find any (recent) long exposure / movement photos...

Well deserving the bip!

An absolutely amazing image Hugo!
It is when I see an image like this that I realise how much I have to learn!!!
Really, it is child's play to hold a glass bowl above a bush and take a photo. This is the seriously heavy stuff of photography!!!
I have just read your reply to Doyle's comments. You really know what you are doing!! Teach me, Master!!! :))
Well done! A pleasure to view!
Cheers

Arrrrgghh! Fill Flash . . . Seems so easy once told! And here I had a chance to impress you with my 'genius'!! :) Anyway thanks for explaining it . . . it was a brilliant decision and the effect sure was cool! Kind of makes the train feel like it's encased in light!

Hey Doyle, thanks for your elaborate comment, much appreciated!
Elementary, my dear Watson, the train is moving from left to right, and the three yellow, wobbly streaks of light are the clue to this mystery...
And now to the bottom of the case, the mystery of the "frozen 2 and the doors. I used a fill flash on the rear curtain, at full intensity (because of the distance) which froze the details on the train just before the 1.6 seconds had passed.
The train is moving at reasonable speed (I guess about 50mph on this stretch) and I started the exposure when the loc had just passed the thingy with the grafitti on it on the left. That's why the lights seem to appear out of nowhere. At first, the sudden start of the lines and the wobble distracted me too, but the longer I toyed with it, the more I felt it was rather consistent with the rubble in the foreground and the grafitti, adding to the 'down town - not a neighbourhood you want to venture out in at night' atmosphere of the photo.
Cheers,
Hugo

Wow Hugo! I love the image! I almost didn't see the cow! (Just kidding)! The slow shutter speed did wonders for the train (and 1.6 second seems to indicate that this train was moving at a fairly good clip) . . . my thought initially was that it was traveling from the right side towards the left side but the three yellow light lines end abruptly (with a bit of a wobble too) on the left and so I have reconsidered and now think the train is moving towards the right and they commenced with the wobble. (You can sense, no doubt, a relation to A. Conan Doyle)! I think the light really adds some magic to this image. The cooler, blue colors of the sky seem to compliment the warm flashes of red and yellow liberally applied throughout the composition. That, and the cool blue signs with the focal clarity apparent throughtout make the whole composition quite pleasing -- especially since the perspective emphasizes a diagonal series of lines. What I DON'T understand is how the number 2 can be seen on the ghostly train with such clarity. You can see doors, windows . . . even the trees on the other side of the tracks. It gives a double-exposure feel to it. Overall it's an incredibly pleasing image and only the wobble in the three yellow lines is a distraction to me. You started with a stopped train perhaps?
:)
