I like the perspective, I thought if you have done it vertical in between F8 or 16 include 70% of the dock that might have improve the scene dramatically!!! Of course it has been a year since you posted :):) but you can always try...This place it looks very good for this type of shooting!!!

This image certainly has impact!
I at first thought like others that a portrait crop would work better, having seen the one done by Susie I now realise that it's because it's in landscape mode that it has the WOW factor in the first place. All that blue sky directs the attention right where it should be...on your very cute little grandaughter taking those uncertain steps.
I love it just as it is!

Mary, I will agree with many commentators about this one, which is a good one, but it could be even better through enhancing the depth be letting that pier/dock seem longer. Either some steps backwards or a wideangle together with shooting the picture from a lower angle, could give make it better, I think.

Hi Mary. I haven't read every single comment but my feelings were a lower angle from further back on the pier. Susie O'Conner had the right idea and since it was the same as I had, I have to agree with her. Not that you needed to be told again... you probably didn't.

My story is the same. I finally wore the seals off of my 1965 Nikon, and got a D70 with the kit lens. I did not realize what 6 MP and autofocus and metering would do... Now I am selling prints to suppliment the additional hardware, software, and equipment costs of my "hyper-photo-graphia". My grip actually has wear marks from the ends of my fingers.

Hi Michael. My camera equipment is no too sofisticated. I do have a few lenses now, but need to learn better how to use them to their full potential, especially as they are not top notch quality. My telephoto lens is to double my optical zoom. However, I sometimes notice a deterioration in picture quality when using it. Whatever, when I got my camera, I didn't know I was going to turn into such a 'click, click' thing. If I knew how much I enjoyed it, I would have bought something more elaborate. Oh well, I'll learn what I can with this and save my pennies for a newer one sometime.

A wider lens and shooting from below would allow you to keep them centered, but open up the background and give it a large recession. Of course, we can't all change lenses on a whim...

84 Critiques . . . so I started reading but confess I didn't finish. Probably has been said already but I just love this shot and the potential it carries. It's good as it stands but (as you yourself say) it feels a tad bit 'off'.
I think the key here is only composition and the centrality of this oh so wonderful subject you have here. Since both heads (and one leg) seem pointed obliquely to the left . . . that feels like the proper direction and the result of that is a lack of need for the space on the right. I would pull in a right side crop . . . and enjoy. This is a good one. (I have taken the liberty of attaching an example). Well done Mary!

Well I'm a little late to the plate and I'm sure it's all been said already!! What a great picture to work with. I like the idea of black and white, but for a totally different feel and mood, because this is quite stunning in color. The light and mood are wonderful! But since you asked, I would crop off some of the right side to put mom and child in the rule of thirds and leave the open space to the left. Another suggestion would be to include more of the pier and shoot at a lower angle, but oh my, what a beautiful image you have here, the light and exposure are very beautiful...I love it!! Dear Mary,
you did put this photo on the CC corner. I disagree with Roger about the faces being in profile towards each other. The look to infinity & the raised foot of your grand-daughter send the same message of the fearless child going on adventure. The concerned-turned head of your daughter adds to the atmosphere. I do agree, however, about the crop.

Anson. The shot I was originally trying for was one of just their joined hands and arms. So, that is somewhat closer to your interpretation. I thought the lake might make a good background. However, I liked this when I saw it. Seeing I didn't get the shot I wanted, I took this instead. I appreciate your taking the time to do, not one but two, crops to demonstrate your suggestion for improvement.

The subject of this photo is your grand daughter in an explorative environment, testing her courage and curiosity. Your daughter, being the child's link back to the "safe" world, is a necessary part of this picture, but the enormity of her size, compared to the child, somewhat overwhelms the child. This picture needs some big time cropping to correct that problem. I would crop the mother out, except for her forearm, and maybe the left leg, leaving plenty of water, shore, and sky to make certain the viewer knows the environment the child finds herself in. That shoud accentuate even more the action of the child's leg and the uncertainty of balancing on the other leg, being aided in that effort by the arm of her mother. A telephoto setting of the lens on the camera would have helped here. I have attempted a crude crop here, Mary, not the best I am sure. Anson

I do not agree with those suggesting a portrait-crop and less space. You know Mary, I believe the blue space has a significant statute regarding to the definition of picture: Ready to go! I can feel the girls small footstep concerning to her petite ability in her surrounding breathing space.
The first move is at the same time taking the first responsibility. Learning to go it means being conscious and caring on into a new development! I love the perspective youve chosen in the direction of an endless vision, looking at the water, the mountain and the sky without consideration what left behind, when her future is just on the way towards her face! 7++

It's good. if you are searching answers to perfect shot like this you may:
1. try using shalow depth of filed. Which will make mother and child ultimate center not only compositionally, but in subject.
2. You can also trying to convert this image to B&W to find the answer. Conversion to B&W could reveal flaws invisible in color.
3. Placing them slightly right inside the frame (rule of thirds) will make this image stronger compositionally. Viewer eye always starts from left top then finds main point of image.

Hi Art. Thanks so very much for you comment and suggestion. I wish I had got the hands the other way around for this picture. Probably, if I was looking for this shot of them on the dock, I would have had my daughter hold her daughter's hand which would look safer on a dock. Actually, the shot I was trying for was a picture of baby holding her Mom's hand and thought the water might make a nice background. That's why it is this way. When I saw this on download, I liked it. When I better learn to observe what I am seeing through my camera, I might notice little details like your suggestion. I really appreciate your pointing out what you see.

Sam, I so very much appreciate the time you have taken to write such a comprehensive comment on my picture. I guess I did not rotate it just quite enough. Selective colouring is something I am going to spend some time experimenting with. I have seen some pictures on UF where it has been used very effectively. I am learning how different f settings affect pictures and now do try to use that option more. How did you know I did not use a tripod? I am curious as to how it is that obvious. The 3 or 4 stop soft grad filters are something I am not familiar with, so that suggestion will have to be put on hold until I learn more about this hobby. Thank you so much for the compliment and suggestions.

Hi Ray. I appreciate your comment and suggestions. A tighter crop seems to be the common recommendation. I like your suggestion of placing my 'girls' off centre. This is one of those shots that I can't retake as their visit was short. It will be at least another year before they are back to the lake and the sky is ever changing. Actually, I was going after a different shot, but liked this when I saw it. However, I think my lesson here is to be more conscious of what I am seeing through the camera. Thanks very much for your consideration of my picture.

Although I like the way the rays of light in the sky seem to help point out the pair on the dock, it seems from a number of comments that a portrait crop would be more effective for this shot. That would eliminate a lot of the sky which you find does not add to this picture and some of the dark mountains.

I like the picture just the way it is. Maybe I am reading too much into it, but I see a more philosophical meaning in the image. The fact that the child is mid-step, indicates the leap we all must someday take into the great unknown called life, here symbolized by the water which hides both it's delights and terrors below. Mom is there for guidance, but she already realizes the futility of her attempts to hold back and protect her child forever. You probably did not intend your image to be seen this way Mary, but sometimes creative genius is not intentional.

Hi Mary,
Ok where to Start.
I think your shot is almost perfect. Just a few tiny things I would have changed and maybe that would have made the difference you were looking for.
First I would have rotated the canvas in PS about 1 degree CC.
Next thing I would have done was Cropped the shot into Pano format.
As Rob suggested, I would have tried this in B&W and used a bit of selective color.
I am not sure your lens capabilities are but if you have them F2.8 would have put your focus on your daughter and grand daughter instead of the entire image.
If you have a Tri-pod I would have used that. By using that you can use a 3 or 4 stop soft Grad filter that way you could have exposed the Sky a little longer allowing you to get a bit more saturation on your subjects without blowing out the sky.
I think you have such a good eye for composition that in Portrait format this shot would be fine leaving them in the center, because they are you subjects and not the lake, so the eye doesn't need to flow through the shot as much.
All in all my Friend you produced a wonderful shot. Well done

The basic shot is very good Mary and it is a very endearing Mother and child composition with a wonderful piece of leg action from your little granddaughter. I concur with what quite a few others have already observed.... a tighter crop. Even removing some of the right hand would place the figures off centre. I like what Susie has done, it looks good but I personally don't like interfering too much with postwork. Far better to re-take the image and compose along Susie's lines, if that is at all possible. You have received so many wonderful suggestions for your consideration and I will not embroider any more. I really love the feel of this photo. And I love that you are open to suggestions!
I agree with what a lot of the folks thought. Here's my version, I hope it's okay to play with your image. I would only do this on a CC image. I just cropped it and then added (very crudely) some more pier in by cloning. Then adjusted the shadows and highlights.
You sure have a cute family here!

Oh bless... gorgeous capture... she looks like she is about to tip in her toes to feel how cool the water is!
The elements here seem fine to me, however I do think there is a lot of darkness in the blue here... maybe a few highlights in the water would set this one alight & seperate the lake from the hills & sky.
Agree with Roger about cropping it either side of the pier though think the pose you have caught here is fantastic!
In summary, excellent photo... just a little lighter & I think it would be perfect x

The shot is wonderful, and a portrait mode may have been better in some terms, yes, as the pier would have led the eye straight to the subject, or perhaps shooting so a little more of the pier was included, but I like it for what it is....mum and baby together taking a stroll..maybe b/w as suggested before..a beautiful composition though..just wonderful

I like it a lot, too. But since you ask, it might be improved by a portrait-mode crop. This would concentrate our attention on mother and daughter. The space on either side doesn't do anything for the picture, and if anything you would get a stronger sense of perspective from the pier underfoot to the distant bank and the sky above. Also it might work even better if mother and daughter were facing each other or somehow interacting more with each other. As human beings, we are more interested in faces than most anything else, so seeing more of their faces, perhaps nearer to profiles (?) might also have helped. You should put this in Critiquer's Corner to get more opinions, Mary. Or is that what you intended to do? (I see you call it your first CC picture...) You have to click on that option to make it work, however.

Mary I really like this shot a lot! It has a really Classic, almost timeless feel to it; have you tried it in B&W or Selective color perhaps??? I think B&W might do it. :)
