Thanks James, I agree with you that the glare on the bug makes it look out of focus, and the sharpness falls on the leaves instead. I know now that paying attention to glare is so important. It was very helpful suggestion, thanks again./ Ann
The problem, as Francesco has suggested, is the glare on the tops of the bugs (especially the dominant bug).
I thought it was just sunlight from above. If that's the case use a notebook or somesuch to shade the shot so the light level is more uniform or controlled.
The glare makes it look as though the closest part of the bugs is out of focus (but judging from the surounding leaves I don't think that's the case).
If you were using a flash, you could try using either a difuser or bouncing the flash (the direct flash is more prone to glare).
Another possible solution is using a polarizing filter which allows the lens to "look through" the glare. There are several advantages to using a polarizing filter--though that may not be possible using your camera.
