City - Belgrade State - SERBIA Country - Yugoslavia
About
Pobednik is one of the best and better know works of the Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Meštrović. It was erected after WWI marking two very important events. 1) The Allied victory of the Great War; and, more importantly, 2) the defeat of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire by the Kingdom of Serbia.
It is located in the Kalemegdan Fortress (from the Arabic and Turkish languages, meaning: Fortress amidst battlefields), overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. The fortress is believed that was stablished in the 3rd century BC by the Scordisci, a Celtic tribe. The Romans payed particular interest to Singidunum (proto-Belgrade) and it became a defining point of the Roman Empire and the "barbaric Central Europe".
Since the first settlements, Singidunum was sacked repeatedly by the Goths and the Huns, interestingly, legend says that the remains of Attila lie under the fortress.
Belgrade (Beograd in Serbian) was first mentioned as such in the 9th century and means White Town.
Due to its strategic location it has passed hands many times through Byzantium, Hungary, Bulgaria, the Serbian State, the Ottoman Empire, Austria, the Romans, etc.
It is a very emotional experience to walk on the fields were so much blood has been shed throughout the ages. To walk where the Romans walked and stand on the remains of a city defiled and scorched by the Crusades in Antiquity and the modern barbarian huns: NATO.
Después de leer toda la historia tan interesante que cuentas y ver la imagen me deja impresionanda. Simple, majestuosa,en silueta y con el edificio moderno más impresionante aun... Excelente! Marta:_))
Thankyou for the informative note about Belgrade, Francisco. You did a great job in composing the photo and made silhouettes to create a simple, abstract feel. Excellent! P.S. it should be 31_74, 32 not before December...I am not in a hurry!
