Okay, my final solution to this monstrosity: Photoshop some tether lines in on the guy with which we can all pull him back to earth.

Interesting visual abstraction, seems like he is floating on air. Henri would be interested.

Gayle!
Thanks for the comments and I guess I'm getting old since the comment I left before yours was in English and, yet, has a translate button!!! Translate from stubborn old man to photospeak no doubt!
Ok . . . no need to put me on the correct path . . . I DO actually know what happened for the button to appear . . . but my story is much more entertaining than the truth anyway! LoL!
By the way . . . I have kept y'all guessing long enough and it's time I came clean. Ok . . . he actually WAS flying. There it is!
:)

hi,reminds me of Cary Grant in a flying machine flick....i have looked and looked at this image and i can only say that the BG,particularly under the bike gives the impression of being an aerial shot because of the flat contrast level....whatever causes the effect,it sure does add an element of uniqueness and whimsy to the comp...very nice conversion and cool shot,Doyle! regards, gayle (and thanks for recent coms to me)

Wow Francis!
For a relatively new member I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see you commenting . . . so many don't. The picture posted was never altered at all . . . only coverted to B&W in PS. I'm not so sure about the 'illusion' . . . just feel like it can be seen if you try to but I never sensed any illusion until it was mentioned!
Regards, Doyle I <~~~~~
Keep commenting my friend . . . it's so very much appreciated!

I would like to start by saying well thought out image,...
I would then have to ask, how many alterations were used in creating the B&W, or should I say which program, for as your brother tried to point out with the loss of white lines and your lack of approval in some case creating a duo tone images from color or allowing an auto based program to do such work for you can create a sense of false demension, which in this case would explain the look of floating.
Seein you use a Nikon, there site has links to tip sites which can get rid of this problem
Franco
and thank you very much for your comments

Yo Bro! It is with deep regret that I should inform you that the re-worked version you posted (sans crosswalk and oil stains) STILL shows him flying to my eye!!! You were right, of course, about the shadow . . . but I was adding shadow tongue in cheek . . . clearly not connecting him to the shadow to re-inforce the image of him flying. If only oil stains were as easy to remove in real life, huh? I should have named this Mr. Poppins.

Sorry, my twin (evil) brother but you are wrong. It IS the white line causing the problem. I removed it just for grins. And voila, he's on the ground.
Once I removed it, I found the curb line up at the top to be a problem too. It didn't even show up until I got rid of the crosswalk. So I took that out too.
Then I decided the large oil stains presented a problem. Took them out too.
Sorry, just couldn't help myself. The picture and its optical illusions were just to tempting not to figure out. I'm calling this my "Lesson in Doyle".
Here's my "rework"

Sorry, Doyle, still doesn't work. Mostly because there IS a shadow present already, directly behind him. So you can't have two shadows.
I never noticed the shadow behind him until I came looking for shadows based on your comment. I still think it is the crosswalk lines, or maybe even the lack of tire contour where it his the ground. And it may be the result of your post-processing. Maybe upload the original for me? That way I can kinda sorta maybe prolly give you further criticial critiques on it.
You know, if this were a woman on that bike, we could title this Mary Poppins.

Dave: I've figured it out (the illusion) . . . it's not the crosswalk. It's the fact that the subject, myself and the sun lined up exactly so that he has no visible shadow anywhere! The shadow is what would have locked the image down in the traditional three dimensional setting. I drew a crude shadow on the image to illustrate my point. See how the shadow places him in the scene?? :)

BTW - Maybe - possibly, kinda, sorta the illusion comes from the placement of the sun in such a position that I am between subject and Sun . . . I notice that the sun shadows seem almost gone from the image. I wonder if adding ground shadow in PS would cement the illusion!!

I am trying to figure out why he looks like he is airborner. I know it is an optical illusion but why? Is it the crosswalk behind him that does it? I don't know.
Anyway, strange, strange photo, looks so 1950s with the b&w thing going on. Kinda, sorta unique so I guess that means good job!
Best wishes, Dave

Dear Doyle This looks so weird and faboulous! A well-dressed man on a bike who look like he´s balancing on something. The angle really tricks the eyes which I love! It seems like you´re always climbing on rooftops. Maybe you´re aiming at being Santa Claus´helper?;-) All the best, Annemette

Thanks Nil.....I very much appreciate that. You can actually see a bit of the shadow behind him but the angle of the sun was such that I was centered between him and the sun (several stories higher) . . . I think this is partly what makes it seem like he is flying to some.

You have created an effect in your postwork of a flying cyclist as the wheels do not look as if they are in contact with the ground. Neat piece of magic Doyle. Great angle for the shot my friend and very nicely converted mono tones. A wonderful candid action shot, albeit the action is fairly laid back:):) Well done to you Doyle, good luck with the project my friend. My very best wishes to you as always.....Ray
