Years ago I did a large series of eye shots (using film). I found that using a telephoto (rather than an upclose macro) and shooting outdoors gave me the best results. Since your working with a fixed lense (as am I until my SLR dreams come true) that limits things, but try the outdoor shooting. The pupil will shrink right down and you'll get more of that cool patterned portion--and your refelctions will be more interesting (like maybe a tree scene).
