Thanks Hugo, I'd tried a few different crops on this one but I didn't think any were improvements on this full frame one. But now that you've commented on the horizontal branches I think I might try cloning them out on the left 'bald' tree. This would also mean that the top wasn't cut off by the frame.
Hi Bruce, I find this a very interesting shot for more than the photo itself. I've tried to take shots of similar scenes many times, but I was never quite satisfied.
The reason is, that I can't really find a good balance between either cutting off the tree tops using a landscape format, or allowing an excessive amount of sky, and including the tops of the trees using a portrait format.
I think that's the thing I struggle with in this photo too, although I'm not primarily concerned about the cut-off treetops, but more with the horizontal brances near the edge of the photo. Still, the tones are magnificent, and I do like the build up of the lines towards the right of the photo. Good combination of (near) symmetry in the bald(?) trees and the mounting elements right of the centerline. That works well!
