I've just read your description of the nature and purpose of spirit houses under another photo in this series. I see I was wrong, and that they are not comparable with the Japanese god shelf, which is for worshipping ancestors. What they DO have in common is that they both predate Buddhism and don't owe much, if anything, to "official" Buddhist teachings. Sorry for my confusion.

Hi, Len. Does this series mean you had a chance to get back to Thailand again? Or are these shots from when you were there last time? A far, far cry from Brum, isn't it! In Japan, ancestors don't get spirit houses, they get god shelves. At least, I am assuming they serve the same function... Odd, in Budhhist countries, where the official teaching seems to be that rather than personal survival after death there is just a sort of recycling of the psychic energy of the personality. But maybe I got that bit wrong... [grin]

You're right, Nessa, though these days they're mainly bought 'off the shelf' - which is why I often prefer some the simple countryside ones, small things just knocked together.
