I think the black edges are a variation of what we all could have done to enhanced this composition. Desaturate or blur more, the important is to show the little universe surrouding a child and his book. So black edge is as good as anything else. Good Job!

beautiful serene portrait. nice composition. I only don't understand why you took the light away from the edges. The focus will anyhow lie on your son in this picture, so the shadow edge is unnecesarry in my opinion. It also takes the nice colors away from the surrounding and the reflections in the water.
