Wow! Thanks for the comments. I'm familiar with the restrictions. The restrictions can't stop me from wanting to take more "intimate" shots though. :) I do have a couple of shots of one of the boats stationed here while underway but it was before I had my "big zoom" (I think I shot them with my 28-80mm). The pictures I want to take now would be similar, all underway, just a matter of timing and luck now that I have better equipment.
Julie, photography of submarines has always been pretty restricted. Bases have always prohibited photography; it was necessary to have a pass on bases. All work we did was approved by the Navy prior to publication. We had the permission of the Navy to work on three books on navy ships, and were provided access to many ships in port, and a few that were undereway. That said, there is no prohibition of shooting photos of ships underway. You can photograph any ship as it passes by.
I'm new to this site, and just a beginner in photography at that, and I have to say I was so excited to see a picture of a sub come up. This, in particular, is a gorgeous shot. I visited your website, more great sub pics. My fiance is in the Navy on a sub and I am trying to figure out ways to get shots of the magnificant machines myself. Very difficult after 9/11. But they're so gorgeous.
wonderful juxtapositions going on here. Nature man, ocean sub bathtub, menacing soft, strong weak, meager vibrant, hard soft.. etc etc. etc. Having the american flag there is also a very nice bonus. going back to the juxtapositions, one might even see America's superpower.. harness nuclear energy, the world oceans, etc etc. etc.
