Hi Anindya...when you have a situation like this with a bright background the easiest way to get your exposure correct is to put your camera on manual, go up close to the subject and take a light reading off them and then move back and compose/focus your shot using that light reading.
This will give you a half decent exposure but will not give you any catch lights in the eyes. For best results use a fill flash in this situation...your pose and composition is good...*smile*...Maggie

Anindya, Bright B/G fooled your camera meter.Without your flash, you could have used slower shutter speed rather than camera exposure was showing or +1 bracketing , which would have helped to brighten up your subject's face. I used this technic to over exposed some B/G to bring out my main subject.
Your portfolio is really good. Looking for next post of your same subject with same composition.
sujit.

Thanks Heather and Kevin. The truth is that my old flashes had broken down and I was yet to acquire a new one.I didn't like the built in flash of F80 and I was not comfy with the AF camera,so I said let's see what I can do with my old FE and 50mm lens. Many of my b/w pix here are a result of that 'project',if u can call that that. Thanks once again for the encouragement.

The composition is there, and I've been there, taking a shot you think would be great, only to find out you should have used fill flash.
I carry a hot shoe adapter and a remote flash as security now. It's definately a great shot, but we would like to see more of the model's face.
Keep up the good work.

Anindya I've been watching your portraits and I like this one the best so far. She is looking very relaxed here. I like it! Technically, I guess there is some detail lacking in the hair. I'm afraid someone else will have to help you with that! Nice.H:)

You're right ,of course,Mike.I was shooting her in a small balcony and turning her around would have brought the uninteresting door and wall in the BG.Sadly,I didn't have a flash or reflector handy.I put this up to see whether this is a totally useless image or no.It's hard for me to decide.

You have a difficult situation here, with a background much brighter than your subject. Looks like you could have used a fill flash or maybe a bounce card or perhaps just turning her around and shooting at a different angle to get more light on her face relative to the background. Some of your other portraits are stunning ? ?Looking Out?, ?S? and ?M (2)? are all quite lovely.
