Segment of Beached Boats at Saintes Maries de La Mere 1888
"It was a sketch which had remained unfinished because of my illness. So that now things are coming to life again. It represents fishing smacks on the beach, big hulls of boats lying on the hot sand, and the sea far away in a blue haze; it was a sunny day, but the sun was behind me, so one must feel it only in a few short-cast shadows and the vibration of the hot air above the sand. It is only an impression, but I think it is rather correct..." Vincent Van Gogh
Written in a letter to his brother Theo... it's not clear if he was speaking about this specific drawing or not... but one in this series of drawings and paintings no doubt... He also often did drawings as studies after finishing a painting.
Some people have so much talent. Van Gogh did such wonderful work. The lines and curves in this are so appealing. Neat to see. Thanks for sharing. Mary
