Hi Kathy, I like this one best! This is such a cool photography...that old barn has got some history behind it. I like the shadows in the mountains too. With the sky as white as it was I wonder if they got snow later that day? :) Pat

What a great landscape Kathy! This is really a teriffic composition! The barn is perfectly placed within the frame! The row of bare trees makes a nice background for the subtle red color of the barn and the mountains in the background are very beautiful! Overall a first rate photo Kathy! Nice work! Take care and GOD bless!............................John

Kathy, the colored version is an awesome photo. All well done. Never thought I'd pick sepia over color but there's something about that one. Altho I like the crop on the first one. I like the old feel to it. Both are very well done. Thanks for commenting on my photo. Marilyn

What a difference to the dangerous looking clouds! This is an idyllic, peaceful landscape, again and again I feel: it must be fantastic to live in a place like this. Best: Gyorgy (Looking forward to seeing the sepia version, too.)

I love having the benefit of viewing both versions Kathy. Ye Olde Worlde look to the sepia version would have satisfied me and I would have applauded loudly. It has wonderful tones to it and great atmosphere. HOWEVER...the colour version is the one for me. The colours have worked particularly well in the mountains and this has made it the stronger composition. I understand the need for the different crop to the sepia...Well done to both my sweet....Best wishes..Ray

Beautiful as a postcard, Kathy: red, green and blue, wonderful clarity on the house and on the trees, great composition! I definitely prefer the color version. The sepia is nice too, but the colors are the best aspect here, I think. Especially the white roof contrasting with the red. In the sepia the white roof is more pronounced and the missing red can't balance it. Great capture! Ina

Very nice Kathy, one of my faves of your barn shots. The sense of balance in the landscape is wonderful and you have done a very nice job of showing the snow & light in the hills. It tells a story that this farm is in a valley surrounded by ridges. The one ridge we see with the shadow of another ridge behind us in the setting/rising sun. Also very nice earthy colors with just the right saturation. Love it.
As to the B&W/sepia version, I like both of these shots very much, but for different reasons. The lines in the barn (and what appears in B&W as snow on the roof) are more evident in the B&W version given that that medium is flatter and seems to favor contrasty lines and shows the shapes of flat objects (the roof) more than their texture. I would like to see the same crop in the sepia version than you have displayed in the primary shot here. Looking at the sepia version the barn felt just a little bit cramped in the shot to me and more space around it might open the feel up a bit. My impressions anyway...
Best regards, Mark

I like the colored version. It has its own calm serenity, thanks to the colors and composition. The sepia version has some "old time" mood, but is to sharp and to bright to be. Regards, Kees

Winter landscapes are second on my list to autumn ones. Nature seems sleepy in all its aspects. I love here those smoky trees, colours and shapes, and the shadows going up from the valleys to the crests.Combination of huge fir tree/pine tree and building gives a homey feeling to the shot. I believe the sepia one might look completely different, you'd kill the smoky colours of the trees and the winter atmosphere will only be guessed. The thumbnail is too small to judge! Thanks for visiting my site! Gabriela

No easy decision, Kathy. Each version has it's own quality and they are indeed different images. I like both, but if I would need to take only one I would vote for the color version. But not based on any detailed analysis, just my feeling.

hi, i like the layers/depth to this one and think it shows the WA rural colors and textures well... the sepia tone gives comp that vintage look, but i see some problem areas where the tops of the trees look too dark and some areas have a "fringing" look....the crop is nice, but overall i vote for this one...the hazy sunlight hitting the hills works in the BG well, too regards, gayle (we had quite a bit of sunshine today!...did ya see it? ) ;>

Thanks for your nice words, and for taking the time to critique this shot, Dave! When I changed this to the sepia tones the snow in the mountains looked very blown out and blended into the sky too much, thus the different crop. I kept being drawn back to the color version, so I guess that's the one for me, too! Thanks again! Kathy

Kathy,
This is a beautiful image, you should be proud of it. I don't know why you would want to change it to sepia or black and white. Look at the wonderful colors of this image, it's fresh. It brings me to the cool atmosphere. The color also brings the "3D" effect also. I think that what scores on this photograph.
Excellent sharpness. Sharpness always attract the human eye!
Thanks for posting this image.

Well this is a popular image so far! Good job. I definitely like the color best and the cropping on the first no question. The color showcases the dusting of snow much better and there's much more depth in it. So apparently my vote is for the color. ) This MUST have been a while back...is that sunshine I see on the top of the hillside? Suz

Oh there's the sepia version. Although this has a nice photograph of yesteryear feel to it and is still lovely Kathy I do prefer the colour version. To me that is real and alive with nice green rolling lawns, trees and all and that's the one I want to buy. :)

Well I just love this scene. That would make a nice little holiday home I would think. A little paint, a few curtains...perhaps a few windows. :)
Serioulsy though I love everything about this scene. Nice colours with that little dusting of snow on the mountains and the sunlilght just catching it softly. I really would love to have a nice little cabin right where that barn is. Beautiful. I love it.
Cheers - Ann :)

Each shot has it's strengths, Kathy! The composition, of course, is great in both, and I like the colours and lighting in the original. The sepia toning certainly gives that version an "old time" feel, though, totally conversant with the subject. It seems the sepia version is cropped a little differently, though, loosing some of the background mountain. In all, I think I prefer the colours of the original. Dave.
