Hi Eric - I actually prefer the previous one: the drops and colours seem that much more intense.
When I do these I clean the glass thoroughly and then treat it with Rain-X. This really does have a remarkable effect on the height of the water beads. I've got a few uploaded here on UF, but you might also care to look at those done by UF member Dan Lightner, a master of this technique.

I took a piece of glass, elevated it about 18" above the surface, arranged the pencils underneath and put a bunch of water drops on the glass... I focused on the drops and took the shot... :)
