  Q. NEWBIE

Asked by Steph     (K=6) on 3/20/2005
Hi everyone...
Im going to be taking a photography course in the fall and I have a few basic questions...
What is a 4 by 5 monorail view camera, how do they work, how do I use one, and what do they cost?
The course requires the use of such a camera and I have no idea what this contraption is...
HELP!!
Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Steph, I can almsot guarantee that they will be providing this camera for you to use.

The "4 x 5" is the size of the film used - four inches by five inches. They are rather big, bulky cameras used almost exclusively in studious. I used an 8"x10" while in school for visual communications. They produce very large transparincies and excellent detailed enlargements.

These cameras retail for between $400 - $5000 and up, so I really doubt they will force you to purchase one, more likely the entire class will use one owned by whoever organization is giving the course.

Have fun and enjoy using a great piece of equipment,

Chris

Hi Chris. Just curious, is this a photo of a Bender Photographic Kit 4 X 5? Do you have any knowledge or experience with this camera?
I've been considering large format and I wonder if this camera is a worthy introduction.

Best wishes, Kurt

Ahh,Chris, yes indeed the 4x5 kit camera! My first LF & at present refurbushing (rebuilding) to suit my needs as I see them. My first labor of love may soon become once again the camera of choice over the cambo that has become the camera of choice. If it turns out well, I may be selling the Cambo!
