Looks good. I went to their site, they said that the free sites are under construction right now so i'll have to wait a few days...no problem.
One thing i dont understand though is this...if i buy my OWN domain name(i see different sites selling them for different ammounts..) Would i be able to still my domain name that i purchased with another host if i decide to cancel and go somewhere else? Im really new at all of this!!
Thanks, Corrielynn

Corrie thanks for asking the question. I do not have an answer unfortunatley but would like to add that I would also LOVE to create a website. The one thing I would like it to have is that people can't download the photos. This is beacuse I would like to photograph children adn obviously eventually get an income from it if possible but more importantly for child security reasons.I am also keen to get tips and ideas have NO idea where to start.

Alison Stroebel: "The one thing I would like it to have is that people can't download the photos."
Imposible. If you can see the pic on your screen, you can save it. Scripts that try to prevent this don't work. Even embedding your pics in a flash applet won't stop anyone. You can always take a screenshot.

Hi Diabo. Thanks so much for the info, makes me realise how little I know. I am actually not too worried about a screen dump ( is that the same as screen shot?) but I see on some sites your right click button doesn't work. hat I feel is a good enough deterrant. Lets face it if that are so desperate they will find a way no matter. Just want to make it a tiny bit harder. Can one do that?

Scripts to disable the right-click button in Internet Explorer usually don't work in browsers like Firefox or K-Meleon.

Corrielynn, Not sure if you started your website, but a great place with no "banner ads" is www.hostdepartment.com - I had mine there and converted to a hosted site for $60/year a few months back. Hope that helps - sorry I'm so out of date on the threads.

As for not wanting anyone to be able to download the pictures (or steal them) watermarking them would be a bigger aid in detering the would be theives. Put your name/or the name of your organization across the center of the photo so that it cannot be easily cropped out. The photos that you would sell would be the ones without the watermark logo.
I also agree with Cheryl about www.hostdepartment.com, good host, many features and low cost too.

if you have ur own domain name, does isp's allow u to host ur own site on a spair computer?. SPecifically RCN. just asking cuz my connection is pretty fast, and i have an extra box that is to slow to do anything with, but could probably run with linux just fine.

1) free hosting services: Be VERY careful. More than a few claim ownership of anything you put up there (so you effectively sign over the copyright of your work to them by uploading to them). Many are also unreliable (lots of downtime, you get what you pay for), and/or insert large advertising into your pages you have no control over (which may contain trojans, spyware, advertising for porn, etc.). Then there are those that don't allow you to have any commercial activity, no good if you want to market your photography through them.
2) self hosting. Be sure your ISP allows it. Many do not or only with additional payment. You're of course also running more risk of downtime unless you have a lot of computer knowledge and equipment (backups, uninterruptible power supplies, etc. etc.).

I ended up going with host department-it was fairly cheap, and worth the money! Im having a hard time with it though, i dont know how to actually upload something to it without using their 'templates'. I have the whole site designed and ready to go, but i cant figure out how to get it on there without using their design software. My sister is a wiz with this stuff, and even she sais its kind of weird, and she's trying to figure it out. She managed to get SOMETHING up for the time being, but is trying to figure out the rest. www.corrielynnphotography.com.

Is DREAMWEAVER one of the best? Ive been hearing a lot about it. What is the approx. price? Is it "user friendly"? Maybe those of you who have a lot of experience can offer some insight into the many choices of how to proceed. ...THANKS! BTW - If a person would master DREAMWEAVER, is there enough of a market for a part-time income?

Mark, Dreamweaver is my personal preference for web development. Some other programs I have worked with include GoLive (Adobe's retaliation to Dreamweaver before they merged with Macromedia) and Apple iWeb. I'm not even sure if you can find GoLive anymore (its not worth it in my opinion anyway). iWeb is definitely the easiest of the remaining two as long as you stick to templates, but I have always found Dreamweaver to be very user friendly as well. I used it to make my first online portfolio well before I had any programming knowledge. My current website was built using iWeb (www.faultydrive.com), but it took a lot of outside programming to get it anywhere near where I wanted. If you do want to go that route, check out www.Guimkie.com. They have two tools called iTweak and iMap that give you a lot more options when using iWeb. Really, you should look into some coding just to help yourself out. Start with html and work your way on up. Check out http://freecomputerbooks.com and www.dreamincode.com if you ever need help. Hope this helps!
